The program will be offered again on July 10 and 23. The Aquarium will open at 8 p.m. and a film on grunion begins at 9 p.m. in the John M. Olguin Auditorium. Prior to the predicted run, everyone will gather on the beach to await the grunion. The program cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors, students, and children. Warm clothing is recommended. </P><P> Grunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family, which are one of the few fish species in the world that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches. They are found from central California through Baja California, with Cabrillo Beach being one of the better places to observe the fish. At times the beach may look as if it is covered in a blanket of silver as the wriggling fish arrive to mate. The females burrow into the sand to lay eggs while the males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs. Then both males and females catch the next wave back out to sea. The fertilized eggs incubate for about 9 days in the sand before the tumbling action of the waves from the next series of highest tides cause them to hatch, and carries them back out to sea. Grunion may be caught by hand in the months of March, June, and July which is the open season and grunion catchers 16 years and older must have a valid California fishing license. During April and May grunion may be observed, but not captured. </P><P> The Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro and is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with support from FRIENDS of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. The Aquarium will open at 8 p.m. and a film on grunion begins at 9 p.m. in the John M. Olguin Auditorium. Prior to the predicted run, everyone will gather on the beach to await the grunion. The program cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors, students, and children. Warm clothing is recommended. </P><P> Grunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family, which are one of the few fish species in the world that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches. They are found from central California through Baja California, with Cabrillo Beach being one of the better places to observe the fish. At times the beach may look as if it is covered in a blanket of silver as the wriggling fish arrive to mate. The females burrow into the sand to lay eggs while the males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs. Then both males and females catch the next wave back out to sea. The fertilized eggs incubate for about 9 days in the sand before the tumbling action of the waves from the next series of highest tides cause them to hatch, and carries them back out to sea. Grunion may be caught by hand in the months of March, June, and July which is the open season and grunion catchers 16 years and older must have a valid California fishing license. During April and May grunion may be observed, but not captured. </P><P> The Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. Throughout the day there will be various battle and equipment demonstrations from various groups competing for awards (given at the end of the day on Sunday) and looking to entertain visitors. </P><P> Welcome to the west's largest continually running re-enactment and living history timeline event! For more than twenty years now the Fort MacArthur Museum has sponsored what has turned into the west's largest multicultural celebration of world military history. What began as a small gathering of cannon enthusiasts has blossomed into a truly spectacular event showcasing the history of military activity from around the world and across time. </P><P> This event is held every year on the weekend AFTER the 4th of July holiday and is a great family friendly event; you will not find anything else like it - anywhere! So, we invite you to come, be a part of history, and see more than 20 acres of historic re-enactments and entertainment in the largest multi-cultural, living history event in Southern California! </P><P> Tickets cost $10.00 per person. Proceeds benefit the restoration, preservation, and education programs of the Fort MacArthur Museum. Tickets can be purchased at the front gate to the museum beginning at 10:00am on both days and as always parking is free.
