SUMMARY:See the Sea\, Si? Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the water for a floating oceanography lab! This hands-on trip will be aboard a specially equipped vessel where you’ll have opportunities to study some of the near shore animals. Learn about the fascinating world of plankton\, animals that call mud their home and some of the fish that prefer the sandy bottom. \nThe trip starts with a “fish-eye” view of the underwater world living on and around the dock\, which will be revealed by an underwater camera. Passengers will be able to watch this real-time ocean documentary featuring sea anemones\, sea stars\, tunicates\, and fish via monitors on the boat. \nOnce the boat enters the harbor\, a specialized net called an otter trawl will be set. Any fishes collected with this net will be placed in tanks on the boat giving passengers up close and personal looks at several types of flatfish\, perch and croaker.  \nA trap will also be set on the ocean floor to try to catch sand bass\, scorpion fish\, crabs and other bottom-dwelling critters. Critters caught in the trap will be displayed onboard giving everyone a chance to touch some of the animals. \nPre-registration is required. SUMMARY:San Pedro Library 130th Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:130 years of library service! That is a whole lot of books checked out and programs\nattended. The library holds a unique place within our community. It is one of life’s rites of\npassage. One generation introduces the library to the next generation and before you know\nit 130 years goes by. For well over a century the library has been the informational hub for\nthe families\, working men and women\, and school children of all ages in this lovely little\ntown known as San Pedro.\n On Saturday\, August 18\, at 2:00 PM in the Phil Scott\nCommunity room of the San Pedro Library we will be\ncelebrating this historic milestone. We hope you will join\nus as we look back on our storied past while looking to\nwhat the future holds for this institution known as the public library. It\nwould not be possible to trace the 130 year history into 400 words so\nlet me set the table for what I hope will be a fun and informative day.\n We are excited to have Councilman Joe Buscaino in attendance!\nCouncilman Buscaino will address the audience and tell us what the library means to him. Library\nAdministration will also address and thank patrons\, volunteers and staff for making the library the great\nplace that it is. We will also hear from library staff. Our Adult Librarian\, Children’s Librarian and Young\nAdult Librarian will all present a short piece that will be entertaining and informative. In addition\, our\nrenowned Friends group is preparing a PowerPoint presentation that will cover much of the history of the\nlibrary. I (David Ellis\, Senior Librarian) might also have a thing or two to say concerning our fine establishment.\n As important as celebrating this milestone is to our staff\, it is also a chance to once again thank you\, the\nlibrary patron\, for your unwavering support of the library. Everything that we do is done with you in\nmind. The library is a vibrant learning center because you take advantage of the resources we offer. With\nthat in mind we hope you will come out on August 18 and give us a chance to thank you in person. Did I\nmention there will be free cake?

DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated Brazilian valve trombonist François de Lima leads a premier quartet of Brazilian musicians in a breath-taking\, joyful and heart-pumping evening of groovin’ samba\, Jazz\, Bossa Nova and MPB (“Música popular brasileira” or Brazilian Pop Music). François de Lima is one of the founders of the Brazilian big band\, Banda Mantiqueira. The band’s album Aldeia was nominated for a 1997 Latin Grammy for “Best Latin Jazz Performance.” He has earned worldwide acclaim for the swing in his interpretations and the creativity of his improvisations. The concert will feature a unique blend of Brazilian ginga (swing) and American jazz including songs by Djavan\, João Bosco\, and Moacir Santos as recorded in de Lima’s Suingue Brasileiro.  de Lima has toured all over the world with world-renown Brazilian artists including Djavan\, George Benson\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Jorge Benjor\, Ney Matogrosso\, Flora Plurim and Airto Moreira and Gal Costa.
