DESCRIPTION:Featuring Dr. Mary Hayden Looney – Pangaea\nand Dr. Marcus Eriksen – Leap Lab \nDr. Mary Hayden Looney joins Pangaea contributions her scientific background of environmental Toxicology and marine health as well as exploring her passion for understanding human impacts on the environment and how to develop scientifically-based conservation strategies. \nDr. Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal drifted 88 days at sea\, from California to Hawaii\, on a raft made of a Cessna 310 Aircraft fuselage perched atop 15\,000 plastic bottles to build public awareness and inspire a movement to save our seas from plastic pollution. They called it JUNK. Pleas join us and explore what we can do to stop this global plastic waste crisis. \nTours aboard Pangea’s Sea Dragon will be available following the presentation.\nAttendance is free and open to the Public. SUMMARY:STEM Lessons for Everyone! - LAMI Berth 78
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Maritime Institute will be showcasing its array of STEM lessons at a special demonstration Saturday\, September 15\, from 1-3PM. We often teach these hands-on lessons to students on our sailing field trips\, but this is your chance to learn about ocean science and how to operate a historic tall ship. We’ll be spotlighting some of our newest educators who are eager to show off the results of their training. \nLessons will include:\nMarine Biology – Looking at cool ocean critters\, large and microscopic\nOcean Chemistry – Test and discuss the importance of acidity and salinity of ocean water\nNavigation – How marine maps (charts) work\, and how to plot a course using geometric tools\nMechanical Advantage – The physics of pulley systems used on boats \nIn small groups\, everyone will get to rotate through and take part in every activity. \nBonus lesson:\nTime permitting\, we may offer an extra lesson on plastic pollution\, examining the real (sterilized) stomach contents of sea birds and sand from local beaches \nIf you’d like to sign up\, please fill out this google form to RSVP: https://goo.gl/forms/7eEn2A1iRUg89Sa72  \nThis event will be taking place on board one of our traditionally rigged brigantines (they will stay tied to the dock this time) in Ports O Call at Berth 78\, San Pedro\, CA 90731. \nYou can sign up for yourself and up to 2 guests. For parties larger than 3\, we’d like people to RSVP individually\, or call our office to discuss bringing a group. Once we hit 36 attendees\, the same form will add you to a waiting list. \nThis learning opportunity is not intended for families (we have had\, and will have other events in the future for families)\, but accompanied\, well behaved teenagers who are eager to learn may attend as well. Even though it won’t be leaving the dock\, everyone will have to sign a general waiver to be on the ship\, and teenagers will need a parent or guardian to sign permission.
