DESCRIPTION:American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial \nOn every 22nd of May at 11am there is a National Maritime Day Observance and Memorial Service\, honoring the American Merchant Marine Veterans who bravely served their country. Located at the foot of West 6th Street\, San Pedro\,  California 90731.\nLuncheon will follow at the Double Tree Hotel.\nAs tradition\, the service will consist of a few speakers\, Memorial Service\, and Blessing of the Wreaths. Once again\, the Committee recommends Massey’s House of Flowers on Western Ave\, in Lomita.\nThere is a new parking lot located next to the Memorial. And best of all\, the weekend event is FREE to the general public! \nLA Fleet Week is not only a fun public event\, but also facilitates numerous symposiums\, exercises\, and outreaches focused on community resiliency\, disaster preparedness\, and support for area residents. \nNo reservations or tickets needed for active duty ship tours! Active duty ship tours are free and are offered on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nAnyone wishing to tour an active duty ship will need to come to the main event EXPO to board a free ship tour shuttle. Ship tour shuttles run daily from 10:15 am to 4:00 pm\, Friday-Monday\, May 27-30\, 2022. The main event EXPO is located at 250 S. Harbor Blvd.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 – directly adjacent to the Battleship IOWA. \nIMPORTANT: The only way to reach the ship tour location is by shuttle from the main event EXPO. SUMMARY:45th Annual July 4th Observance at the Korean Bell
DESCRIPTION:The Annual San Pedro 4th of July Community Observance will be held Monday\, July 4\, 2022 at Angels Gate Park\, home of the Korean Friendship Bell. The Korean Bell\, one of San Pedro’s most enduring landmarks\, plays a key role in the ceremonial observance.  The ceremony will begin at 10:30 AM with a procession to the bell and the posting of the colors. \nTo conclude the ceremonial portion of the day\, the assembled guest speakers and dignitaries will lead the audience in reciting the names of the 13 original American states. As they read the names\, the representatives of the San Pedro and Korean Communities will strike a battering ram into the massive bell\, ringing once for each state. The Korean Bell is rung officially on four other occasions each year – Korean Independence Day (August 15th) Constitution Day (September 21st)\, New Year’s Eve and Korean American Day (January 13th).

DESCRIPTION:The 16th Annual Many Winters Gathering of Elders-\nHealing Through Traditional Teachings\nOctober 6th-9th\, 11am – 6pm\, Pacific Time \nSan Pedro\, CA – The Many Winters Gathering of Elders (MWGOE) Organizing Committee is excited to announce its 16th MWGOE\, scheduled for Thursday\, October 6 through Sunday\, October 9\, from 11 am to 6 pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) in San Pedro\, CA on Gabrielino-Tongva territory. The MWGOE is a four-day gathering where Native/Indigenous Elders and knowledge-keepers from across the country gather to share teachings through oral tradition with the community. The Gathering also hosts various Native ceremonies that take place throughout the four days. The event is free\, family-friendly\, open to the public\, and held in partnership with AGCC. \nElders from local tribes including Gabrielino-Tongva\, Acjachemen\, Fernandeño Tataviam\, Chumash\, and other California tribes have attended in the past and will join in October. Tribal elders from other regions (Arizona\, Nevada\, New Mexico\, Montana\, South Dakota and others) are expected\, as well. The Gathering takes place under an arbor which serves as the traditional place of teaching and learning – where Elders pass on knowledge to the younger generation\, which is part of intergenerational healing from historical trauma. \nThe first MWGOE was held on October 12\, 1992\, in response to the false narrative represented by the quincentennial celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ “discovery of America.” Today\, the Gathering continues to be an important occasion for the Native/Indigenous community\, to reconnect to and practice ceremony\, and to celebrate 530 years of spiritual survival. It also allows access for the general public to learn and acknowledge the traditional knowledge and values that have supported and sustained Native lifeways. \nDuring the 16th Many Winters Gathering of Elders\, no alcohol\, drugs\, cameras\, pictures\, video or other recording equipment are allowed; the MWGOE Organizing Committee requests that attendees respect and observe ceremonial protocol. The crowd was larger than expected last year\, but never fear! We have made adjustments to the event footprint to make for a smoother transition between activities on the ship.
