This milestone not only makes the deck beautiful\, but also protects the steel structure beneath it from the elements for years to come. \nWe’re celebrating this impressive transformation with a public unveiling on July 31 from 10–11 AM and we’d be thrilled if you joined us. \nOur passionate crew turned dollars from our wonderful partners into something really special. They gave classy new life to a genuinely cool area of the ship.  \nAnd while the 01 level is now complete\, our deck work is far from finished. This project represents a mere 10% of the deck space aboard the ship awaiting restoration\, and we need your help to keep the momentum going.

Invited City of Los Angeles dignitaries\, veterans\, active military and Battleship IOWA Museum VIPs will be onboard to speak about the national day of remembrance as well as honor visiting military.  \n“Battleship IOWA’s Memorial Day Remembrance is one of the most venerable events aboard\,” shared Jonathan Williams\, President and CEO of the Battleship IOWA Museum. “We are honored to bring the community together to recognize and pay tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country.” \nTo begin the Memorial Day Remembrance\, a moving commemoration ceremony will start at approximately 10 a.m. featuring invited local elected officials and Battleship IOWA Museum staff. Guests who come aboard will have the opportunity to donate $5 for a flag to hang along the pier fence\, allowing the red\, white\, and blue banner to wave in honor of those who have fallen.  \nFollowing the Remembrance Ceremony\, Battleship IOWA Museum will offer a full schedule of activities and entertainment for the entire family. Free Pierside Memorial Day events include a patriotic dance performance by San Pedro City Ballet\, arts and crafts activities in the Kids’ Zone\, live music with patriotic songs by local rock band U.S. 99\, military vehicles on display\, and much more. Guests will be able to purchase food from visiting food trucks and beer tastings from San Pedro Brewing. AM 870 The Answer will also be onboard broadcasting throughout the day. \nVeteran-owned businesses will be exhibiting to promote their products and services\, including Pin-Ups for Vets\, with 10% of proceeds donated back to the Battleship IOWA Museum for their mission-driven programs focused on Education\, Veterans\, and Community.\nAll active\, retired and reserve military will receive complimentary admission to tour the Battleship IOWA Museum. The pierside festival activities are free. Self-guided tours and ship admission tickets will be available for purchase. General Admission ship tickets for adults (ages 12-61) start at $17.95\, seniors (ages 62+) start at $14.95\, with children (ages 3-11) $9.95\, children ages 2 and under do not require an admission ticket. It is planned that we will be at the  bow of the ship  which offers a safe\, secure area with a  great view  of the  battleship and the Los Angeles harbor which generally provides a nice breeze for our event.\n We are finalizing our plans for this year’s Iowa By The Sea Picnic. We continue to enhance the picnic experience and are incorporating suggestions from each year’s attendees from the Evaluation/Comment forms submitted.  Our picnic is a family-oriented\, non-alcoholic event with an emphasis on fun\, camaraderie and safety for all of our guests. The series advances PBC’s mission to “Celebrate the American Spirit” by marking national\, military and naval dates of importance.  \nWho: Recognizing longtime San Pedro resident and former Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs\, Major General (Retired) Peter J. Gravett\, USA\, California National Guard\, Ret.\, with the 2018 VADM Samuel L. Gravely\, Jr. Leadership & Service Award. \nAlso announcing the winner of the Gravely Essay Contest\, which challenges students to explore VADM Samuel L. Gravely’s motto:  Education\, Motivation & Perseverance.  The winning student will read his or her essay and will receive the student award honors.  \nWhat: The VADM Samuel L. Gravely Jr. Leadership & Service Award\, conferred annually\, recognizes leaders in Southern California who exemplify the Vice Admiral’s trailblazing and courageous service. \nThe Gravely Award Celebration is part of “IOWA Remembers\,” the annual series of tributes and ceremonies presented by PBC aboard Battleship IOWA.  The series advances PBC’s mission to “Celebrate the American Spirit” by marking national\, military and naval dates of importance.  \nAbout VADM Samuel L. Gravely:\nAdmiral Samuel L. Gravely (1922 – 2004) had a naval career that lasted 38 years\, during which he broke  boundaries. In 1952\, he reported aboard USS Iowa for duty as a radio communications officer.  He later became the first African-American to command a warship (USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD 717)) and then a major warship (USS Jouett (DLG 29)). Eventually\, his heroism and leadership capabilities resulted in his achieving flag rank and becoming the first African-American vice admiral to command a numbered fleet (U.S. 3rd). Throughout his career\, Gravely received the Legion of Merit\, a Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service and Navy Commendation Medals. The destroyer USS Gravely (DDG 107)\, commissioned in 2010\, was named in his honor. He passed away in 2004 at the age of 82 and was interred at Washington D.C’s Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.  \nAbout Battleship IOWA\nEntering service more than 70 years ago\, the USS IOWA deployed to the South Pacific in the uncertain early years of World War II.  The iconic battleship served with distinction in that war and later\, during the Korean War.  In the 1990s\, as the Berlin Wall crumbled\, the IOWA concluded her active duty.  Battleship IOWA now serves as a historic naval ship museum.  Forged in war and guardian of the peace\, the proud ship keeps watch as the proud sentinel of the LA Waterfront. IOWA’s teak decks and steel bulkheads echo the words and deeds of history\, having carried upon them three U.S. Presidents\, six of the nine American five-star military leaders\, countless foreign dignitaries\, and most importantly\, thousands of her own heroic IOWA sailors.  Visitors are awed by the IOWA’s proud legacy as one of the fastest and most powerful ships ever to sail the world’s oceans.  Battleship IOWA is open to the public daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our hours are 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m with our last ticket sale. SUMMARY:Movie Under the Guns/Hocus Pocus Halloween
DESCRIPTION:Battleship IOWA will be hosting a Hocus Pocus Halloween on Friday\, October 27. This family-friendly event will feature a “Trick or Treat” and a “Movie Under The Guns.”\nBeginning at 5:30 pm\, all guests in costume and those accompanying small children will be invited on board for FREE to trick or treat through a portion of the historic battleship.  \nCostumes should not be violent or offensive and should not contain weapons (actual or replicas). Trick-or-treaters should be 13-years-old and younger and should bring their own “trick or treat” bags.\nThen\, at 7:00 pm\, the 1993 Halloween family fantasy comedy “Hocus Pocus” will be screened outdoors on the ship’s fantail.  \nStarring Bette Midler\, Sarah Jessica Parker\, and Kathy Najimy as a trio of witches\, the Sanderson Sisters\, who\, after three centuries\, are resurrected in Salem\, Massachusetts on Halloween night. It then falls upon two teenagers\, a young girl\, and an immortal cat to put an end to the witches’ reign of terror.\nBoth the trick or treat and movie are FREE.  \n*Limited seating is available on a first come\, first serve basis.\n*Guests are encouraged to dress appropriately\, bring light jackets\, blankets and outdoor chairs.\n*Concessions will be available\, no coolers or outside food and beverages allowed.\n(Time and date subject to change) \nDonations are greatly appreciated.
