SUMMARY:Studio Soup/Angels Gate Cultural Center-ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Henry Krusoe\, Tidawhitney Lek\, and Floyd Strickland \nSign-up for Studio Soup\nA quarterly series of candid conversations about process\, featuring guest artists who share their experience and practice. Artist\, Peggy Reavey hosts this closer look at the unique ways artists move from original impulse to finished piece – how their work comes to be. \nAbout the featured artists: \nHenry Krusoe\, a studio artist based at Angels Gate Cultural Center\, is drawn to the subject of monsters. Monsters can be found or suggested in his sculpture\, videos\, and drawings. Krusoe challenges us to be ready for monsters – now\, and in our future. \nTidawhitney Lek is the sixth of seven children of parents who survived the Khmer Rouge and emigrated to the Long Beach Cambodian Community\, where she still works and lives. Lek’s large paintings depict the textures and patterns of her neighborhood and the emotions woven throughout. \nFloyd Strickland’s mural-sized paintings of African American culture are full of light and color. His current body of work is mainly populated with school age children who he paints to reveal to them – and the rest of us – how beautiful and brilliant they are. Strickland is based in Los Angeles\, and grew up in the Watts/Compton area\, which influences his work. \nStudio Soup is a free\, virtual event hosted by Angels Gate Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Armchair ArtWalk Tour/ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Hispanic Heritage Month \nThe San Pedro Waterfront Arts District\, in collaboration with the artists who have performed or exhibited their arts in San Pedro\, is moving to Last Thursdays. We are accommodating the return of the in-person First Thursday ArtWalk on September 2nd\, 2021. \nThe next Armchair ArtWalk Tour will be held on Zoom at 5:30pm on Last Thursday\, August 26th\, 2021\, and hosted by Gallery Azul owners\, Cora Ramirez-Vasquez\, and Ray Vasquez. \nGallery Azul opened its doors on November 2nd\, 2006\, with a group show in honor of the 3\,000-year-old Mexican celebration of life “Día de Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead). The gallery continued this tradition with themed shows for Women’s History\, Teacher Appreciation\, and Black Heritage months. Gallery Azul is committed to finding high quality\, collectible\, cultural\, and conceptual art to enhance the San Pedro Arts scene. \nFor the month of September of 2021\, Gallery Azul will be celebrating Hispanic heritage by re-envisioning La Loteria cards portraying Mexicanos in various underrepresented professions. This is meant to inspire not only the Mexican community\, but all Hispanic\, Latinx\, Chicano/a\, and Afro LatinX in professions lacking diversity. We believe in supporting each other in the arts and by seeing what we can achieve\, we can be inspired for the future. \nLa Lotería is the “Mexican bingo”\, instead of calling out letters and numbers\, the announcer calls out the image of the card that is chosen. Game boards are marked with beans or pennies. Once a player’s game board is filled\, they shout\, “Lotería!” \nRegister in advance for the August 26th Armchair ArtWalk Tour:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAscuGoqjgiEtcAM487O2HuAjyhiuSIgQsU.\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nWe will also be live streaming from our Facebook page\, where you can find videos of previous Armchair ArtWalk Tours and project progress videos. \nThis is a free service for our community – we are dedicated to introducing our community to the amazing artists of our region. \nLinda L. SUMMARY:"Multiples" Art Opening-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Angels Gate Cultural Center is pleased to present a new art exhibition\, Multiples\, opening Saturday\, July 10th 2021\, on view through September 12th. The artists in Multiples share a strategy of building meaning from an expanded concept of the multiple\, as found in iterative series\, repetition of mass-produced objects and images in new and site responsive works. The exhibition will be open by appointment viewing only\, with information and appointment registration at angelsgateart.org. \n“Multiples demonstrates ingenuity\, the ability to create meaning in unexpected ways and examine the familiar – something much needed today as we encounter spaces and objects in person once again.” -Amy Eriksen\, Executive Director\, Angels Gate Cultural Center. \nMultiples presents the work of Nathan Gulick\, Colleen Hargaden\, Seth Lower\, Megan Mueller\, Samuel Scharf\, Noah Spindler\, Katie Thoma\, and Kayta Usvitsky\, with a text by Hannah Sage Kay. This group of Los Angeles based artists shares a strategy of building meaning from the multiple; from iterative or serial works\, the use of standardized prefabricated materials\, to the accumulation of images. As Hannah Sage Kay writes in Fool Me Twice\, the exhibition investigates\, “what makes an encounter between object and viewer sincere? Do objects embody their functions regardless of time\, place\, and context?” In an effort to make citable organizational structures and units of construction in the built environment\, these works challenge expectations of uniformity and predictability. \nMore information about the exhibition and pending appointments can be found at angelsgateart.orgg. \nAbout Angels Gate Cultural Center\nAngels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s that created art studios and exhibition space within the WWII era army barracks of Angels Gate Park near the Port of Los Angeles. Today\, AGCC hosts over 50 artist studios in addition to a variety of programs to engage the diverse communities of the Los Angeles Harbor region\, including arts education in local schools\, community classes\, cultural events\, and exhibitions of contemporary art. More information about AGCC is available at angelsgateart.orgg. \nCecelia Koger\nDirector of Exhibitions & Public Programs\nAngels Gate Cultural Center\n3601 S Gaffey St.\, Box 1 Bldg. SUMMARY:Anne Olsen Daub-Art Reception
DESCRIPTION:New Works by Anne Olsen Daub – Recent Work\nMy modus operandi changes and is often based on random events and continuous external agitation. Sometimes I start a painting or sculpture by jumping in spontaneously\, arranging shape\, color\, and form until it intuitively spurs a direction or inspiration. Other times\, inspiration comes more directly in the way of metaphors from film\, books\, iconic images\, life etc…that typically lead to a deeper meaning and understanding. My recent work in cardboard was inspired by The Seven Deadly Sins and evolved from there into the Land of Oz. I wanted to create big bold and colorful pieces.\nMask wearing is appreciated in the gallery\, refreshments will be served outdoors. \nJune 12 – July 17. \nMICHAEL STEARNS STUDIO\n401 S. SUMMARY:June ArmChair ArtWalk Tour
DESCRIPTION:SAN PEDRO WATERFRONT ARTS DISTRICT PRESENTS\nARMCHAIR ARTWALK TOUR \nPEDRO PRIDE\n“Hope will never be silent” – Harvey Milk\nThe San Pedro Waterfront Arts District\, in collaboration with the artists who have performed or exhibited their arts in San Pedro\, announces the next Armchair ArtWalk Tour to be held on Zoom at 6:00pm on FirstThursday\, June 3rd \, 2021 at 6:00pm.\nThe June 3rd FirstThursday Armchair ArtWalk will be talking with local artists about their magnificent work in furniture design\, music and visual art\, as they share what Pride means to each of them.\nThe public is invited to join us on Zoom\, by registering for a free ticket and register for a one-hour virtual\, interactive tour with some amazing artists. Register in advance for this meeting: After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\nWe will also be live streaming from our Facebook page\, where you can find videos of previous Armchair ArtWalk Tours and project progress videos. \nMEET OUR GUESTS\nHarold Greene – is a custom furniture artisan\, specializing in truly memorable furniture designs. Since 1978\, Harold has been handcrafting successful works of functional art that people just need to own. His work is meant to be seen and has been featured nationally in galleries\, museums and television. It is a very personal art form inspired by the narrative of the wood. Trees have a story to tell through time\, place\, culture\, and provenance. Each bespoke piece of furniture tells its own personal story through the character of its wood\, form\, and function. Whether private collections or public works of art\, each distinct design lives on to tell a story. \nJoselyn Wilkinson and Don Barrozo – both Montana natives\, met in Los Angeles while jamming in the Venice arts community\, and soon learned they were soulmates. After years of performing in separate projects and raising a family\, they found a new musical identity working together. \nJoselyn & Don explore the crossroads of modern folk and soul through evocative songs planted firmly in American roots\, releasing their debut album “Soar” in late 2020. Joselyn’s soulful voice recalls both Laura Nyro’s soaring tones and Emmylou Harris country folk\, while Don’s guitars play duet partner\, at turns embodying outlaw twang\, plaintive blues\, and muscular rock. \nJoselyn Wilkinson is the founder of women’s global fusion band\, ADAAWE\, a festival favorite\, who has toured the U.S. numerous times. Don Barrozo\, a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and producer\, also serves as film editor for long-running animated series\, “The Simpsons.” \nJoselyn & Don connect with audiences with their warm and engaging show and have opened for artists including Willie Watson and the Living Sisters. During the pandemic\, they pivoted to live-streaming shows from their home Garden Studio\, building community and supporting social and environmental efforts close to their hearts. \nVirginia Broersma is an artist whose work focuses on figurative painting and the representation of bodies at leisure. Her engagement with the art community involves curating\, writing\, collaborative projects\, public art and organizing support for artists along with her studio practice.\nHer work has been exhibited at museums\, galleries and alternative spaces in Los Angeles\, Berlin\, Tokyo\, New York\, and Chicago among other US and international cities. Recent projects have been shown at the Wagnall Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Museum of Latin American Art\, The New Museum\, Los Gatos\, The Lodge Gallery\, and the Laband Gallery at Loyola Marymount University.\nBroersma has been the recipient of several grants including funding from the Arts Council of Long Beach\, the California Institute of Contemporary Arts\, the Puffin Foundation\, and the City of Chicago. In 2019\, she completed a large public mural project with the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District. From 2019-2020\, Broersma wrote a column for the Long Beach Post’s Art and Culture.\nIn addition to her studio practice\, she currently operates The Artist’s Office\, through which she creates systems of support for artists’ professional practices. A Long Beach Resident\, Broersma’s studio is in the Fashion District of downtown Los Angeles\, CA. \nLinda Grimes

There is plenty to do around the marketplace while your candle cures\, including a brewery and shopping. You may also come back another day to pick up your candle if you prefer.\nTicket \nLearn to Ice Dye\nIt’s all the rage! Ice Dyeing is a dyeing technique where ice is used to create a unique color pattern effect on fabric. Ice is used to prevent the dye from reaching some areas of the fabric (similar to tie-dye) while also causing fiber reactive dyes to “split” into some of their component colors which can generate interesting bleed and halo effects. In just a few easy steps\, you can create wondrous patterns and unique designs. Choose one of our items to dye: leggings\, robe\, t-shirt or a baby onesie.\nWebsite \nPottery Wheel for Two\nThere is no experience necessary to try this timeless art form. Great experience to share with a friend and perfect for date night. I will guide you through the process\, provide all of the materials and tools necessary to explore the wheel.\nAfter the session your project will be fully dried\, fired and finished in your choice of glaze to create a functional piece of art. Two pieces per participant are included in your experience. Each additional piece can be fired and glazed for $15.\nFinished products will be available for pickup after a few weeks.\nJust make sure to arrive in clothes that can get messy.\nTicket

SUMMARY:"Borderline" Virtual Opening Reception-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Opens Friday\, January 22nd\, 6:30pm – 8pm PST Online\nVirtual Opening Reception with Curator Discussion and Q&A \nJoin the artists and curators of Borderline for a virtual opening reception with exhibition tour\, live discussion and Q&A. Space is limited for this zoom webinar event. Register at eventbrite. \nBorderline explores the notion of the border – both as a metaphor for our lived experience and as a tool to undermine the certainty of the territories it defines. By occupying the in-between space that exists between two distinct conditions\, we defiantly trespass into adjacent space\, breakdown conventional barriers\, and explore new territories. As a society\, we continue to evolve from these transitional waves of uncertainty as part of the human experience. \nBorderline is guest curated by Mahsa Farhadikia\, Mandy Palasik\, Brandi Sjostrom\, and Naomi Stewart. Borderline includes works by: Janna Avner\, Michael Chang\, Evelyn Contreras\, Christian Franzen\, Richelle Gribble\, Gottfried Haider\, Julian Lombardi\, Ariel Maldonado\, Mandy Palasik\, Allison Peck\, Gazelle Samizay\, Weng San Sit and Joshua Thomen. \nRead more about the exhibition. \nThe gallery is currently closed until further notice. A virtual\, self-guided tour will be available beginning January 22nd with public in-person viewings pending reopening of the AGCC galleries at the guidance provided by state and local health orders. \nTo inquire about the exhibit please contact gallery@angelsgateart.org. \nThis exhibition is generously supported\, in part\, by the Department of Cultural Affairs\, City of Los Angeles.
