SUMMARY:Bridging San Pedro Opening-Angels Gate
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition Opens with Reception on January 18th\, 2020\, noon to 4pm. \n Bridging San Pedro: Visual Literacy as Community Practice\, opens in the Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) gallery with a public opening reception on Saturday\, January 18th\, 2020 from noon to 4pm. \n Bridging San Pedro: Visual Literacy as Community Practice\, is a contemporary art exhibition that highlights the San Pedro community’s relationships to the land and sea. This exhibition extends visual literacy and action to empower community and place. Artists and community members come together to honor the past\, articulate the complexities of the present\, and forge a visually robust path toward the future by engaging in communal\, participatory language and making that bridges San Pedro. \n Artists June Edmonds\, Cole James\, Blue McRight\, and Alexis Slickelman will exhibit works that intersect along themes that bridge the port and communities of San Pedro. Collaborative works\, resulting from the artists’ community workshops held at AGCC this fall\, will be an integral part of the exhibition. \n Jill Moniz\, established curator in various Los Angeles spaces\, curated the exhibition and corresponding workshops to fully engage the local community in a project that explores diverse themes that bridge San Pedro. \n Presentations starting at 1pm in the gallery about the impact of plastic on our oceans will be given by the Surfrider Foundation and Captain Charles Moore of the Alguita\, ocean research vessel. South Bay community members Captain Charles Moore\, Surfrider Foundation South Bay Chapter\, and the Glove Boat collected and donated salvaged ocean refuse for use in McRight’s workshops about the projected sea level rise and oceanic plastic. Art works incorporating the salvaged materials will be on display. \n This project is supported\, in part\, by the Port of Los Angeles through the Community Investment Grant Program. \n Bridging San Pedro will be on view and free to the public in the AGCC gallery from 10am – 4pm Monday through Saturday\, beginning January 18th and open through April 4th\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Community Built Tile Ocean-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:LIKE THE OCEAN – WITH ARTIST ALEXIS SLICKELMAN \n11/9 – 3-5pm (Building F):\nBuild an ocean tile by tile in a workshop with ceramic artist Alexis Slickelman. Participants will paint hand cut tiles with a variety of green and blue glazes that will be provided by the artist. Harness the power of making and collaborating with the community to create enough tiles for an 8’ x 10’ mural\, representative of both the diversity of the San Pedro community and the uniting force of the Port. During the workshop\, share your ocean and San Pedro stories with other participants and the artist. Bridging San Pedro: Visual Literacy as Community Practice is focused on the development of visual literacy in San Pedro community members through hands on making and deep listening exercises. Four artists with singular\, but intersecting\, art projects will work at Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) to foster a greater awareness and association between the Port of Los Angeles\, life in San Pedro and art as a daily lived experience. Each artist will lead free workshops during which members of the community will create elements that will be used to compose the final art piece. These projects will culminate in an exhibition\, curated by jill moniz\, in the AGCC galleries during the first quarter of 2020. This project is supported\, in part\, by the Port of Los Angeles through the Community Investment Grant Program.

SUMMARY:Community Built Tile Ocean-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:LIKE THE OCEAN – WITH ARTIST ALEXIS SLICKELMAN \n10/26\, 11/9 – 3-5pm (Building F):\nBuild an ocean tile by tile in a workshop with ceramic artist Alexis Slickelman.

SUMMARY:Create Your Own Maritime Flag-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 28\, 2019\n9/28\, 10/26 – 3-6pm (Building G)\, 11/2 (Building F):\nMaritime Flags are hung on boats to alert and share information from ship to ship. These flags often designate where the ship is from\, whether or not it’s friendly\, and can even communicate its cargo. Our workshop poses the question: Wouldn’t it be useful to communicate\, from afar\, a clear identity or state if you so choose? Maybe a flag will be the introduction most important to you or maybe it will draw attention from a stereotype. This workshop welcomes people of all ages to invent their own symbols and create flags inspired by International Maritime Flags. All materials will be provided. Bridging San Pedro: Visual Literacy as Community Practice is focused on the development of visual literacy in San Pedro community members through hands on making and deep listening exercises. SUMMARY:EDGE TO EDGE 2-The Lofts
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: \nVenice Institute of Contemporary Art \nAs a continuation of our study of the effect of innumerable geographical\, political\, idealogical and physical borders on various peoples\, we present Edge to Edge 2\, a survey of art happening now in Mexico and Southern California. Curated by Juri Koll of ViCA and Pablo Llana from Mexico\, all of the works from Mexico are exhibiting for the first time here\, and most\, if not all\, of the artists from each respective geographic region have not shown together before. \nIn order to effect a true conversation\, works have been chosen without regard to theme or representation of borders per se. Some may comment on it peripherally\, perhaps\, but that is not the theme – in an of itself – of this exhibition. Open conversation requires respect\, honesty\, and due consideration in order to achieve benefit. That’s partly what this exhibition is about. \nArtists in this show include César Bernal. Anonymous Boh\, MB Boissonnault\, Cosimo Cavallaro\, Antonio Chaurand\, Sulamit Elizondo\, Tania Esponda\, Juri Koll\, Pablo Llana\, Ramiro Martinez Plasencia\, Jorge Moedano\, Diego Narvaez\, Robert Nelson\, Paola Pineda\, Jorge Pinzon\, Ulises Platas\, Erika Rascon\, Catherine Ruane\, Sonja Schenk\, Nizzac Vallejo\, Gustavo Villegas\, Ádrian White and others TBA. \nThe exhibition travels to Mexico following its premiere in the U.S..
