SUMMARY:Black In Place-Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) located at 3601 S. Gaffey Street is pleased to present Black in Place\, a new group exhibition guest curated by Naomi Stewart. Countering erasure\, this exhibition interrogates the living contradictions of existing while Black\, invoking ancestral and indigenous wisdom to explore how Black artists cultivate dreaming through making. Black in Place opens at AGCC with a free public reception on Saturday\, January 25th from 2pm to 4pm\, including a performance by artist Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja. \nBlack in Place includes artists Leslie Duboi-Adkins\, Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja\, Denise ‘deLaSNP’ Coke\, Dea Jenkins\, Steven A. Johnson II\, Denese King-Ashley\, Kandy G. Lopez\, Rosalyn Myles\, Cheyann Washington\, and Fallon Williams. Their art practices reflect journeys of cultural enunciation and recontextualization of Black expression\, particularly in white-dominated spaces. Through audio\, portraiture\, painting\, digital/Augmented Reality\, fiber art\, poetry\, drawing\, and installation\, the artworks engage hidden narratives\, ancestral wisdom and unbridled expression to both sow and assert Black existence. \nThe opening reception will include a performance of Ancestral Libation by Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja. Through movement and intention\, Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja invokes connection\, reverence\, and healing\, grounding the opening of Black in Place with ancestral presence and sacred energy. This performance invites the audience into a moment of reverence and unity\, honoring the ancestral spirits who guide and inform the Black collective memory. \nGuest curated by Naomi Stewart\, this exhibition holds space for invocation\, re-memory\, and unbridled Black expression. Remedying erasure that historically fueled what esteemed African-American collectors Bernard and Shirley Kinsey refer to as the “myth of absence\,” artworks in Black in Place dispel the notion that what is unseen does not exist. The paradox of existing while being rendered invisible is an ongoing reality for the Black Diaspora\, particularly in the West. This exhibition interrogates the living contradictions of existing while Black\, invocates ancestral and indigenous wisdom\, and explores how Black artists cultivate dreaming through making. \nNaomi Stewart is an independent curator\, creative\, and consultant working primarily in the greater Los Angeles region. Stewart received her BA in Anthropology with concentration in Art History from Hawaii Pacific University; and her MBA from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio Business School. Past curatorial projects have included No Song Unsung (Brea Gallery\, 2023)\, a time to tear\, a time to mend (Wonzimer\, 2022)\, Into the Deep\, Unto the New (Inbreak\, 2021)\, Borderline (AGCC\, 2021)\, and Emergent (SuperCollider\, 2020) . Through a lens of identity\, collective healing\, and somatic ecology\, Stewart’s curatorial research and practice challenges the erasure of Black histories while emphasizing African indigenous knowledge systems and insurgent memory to elevate marginalized voices and establish connections to ancestral roots. \nBlack in Place will be on view in the gallery through March 29th\, 2025 with free public visiting hours Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays\, from 10am to 4:30pm. Inquiries regarding private tours or artist/curator interviews can be scheduled by contacting gallery@angelsgateart.org. \nBuilding A

SUMMARY:Solace/Sublime-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Conversations – Solace / Sublime \nGallery Conversations\, AGCC’s onsite artist talk series\, will feature the curator and several artists of Solace/Sublime in a live conversation and Q&A in the gallery on Saturday\, August 19th\, at 3pm. \nPhoto Courtesy of: Megan Frances\, Subtropical Tangle III\, 2020. \nGallery Conversations\, AGCC’s onsite artist talk series\, will feature the curator\, Molly Enholm Velazco\, and several artists of Solace/Sublime in a live conversation and Q&A in the gallery on Saturday\, August 19th\, at 3pm. \nSolace/Sublime is a group exhibition featuring the work of artists who look to the phenomenon of the natural world as a primary source of inspiration. Historically\, portrayals of the natural world were often cast as attempts to conjure the aesthetics of the sublime. Accordingly\, paintings of land\, sea and sky would emphasize the grandeur of nature and its epic scale and power to conjure emotions of awe\, and even terror\, within the viewer. In this exhibition\, the works of contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields\, Megan Frances\, Yvette Gellis\, Virginia Katz\, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco\, seek to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. To conjure a view of an endless horizon\, towering mountains\, or the unfettered power of raw nature to offer moments of hope and solace\, as opposed to existential dread. Through exploring these elemental forces of nature\, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming\, the eternal and the ephemeral\, the solace and the sublime.

SUMMARY:Solace / Sublime-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Solace / Sublime\nOpening Reception July 8th from 3-5pm \nSolace / Sublime is a group exhibition featuring the work of artists who look to phenomena of the natural world as a primary source of inspiration. The exhibition\, curated by Molly Enholm Velazco\, brings together the work of Contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields\, Megan Frances\, Yvette Gellis\, Virginia Katz\, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco\, seeks to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. Through exploring these forces of nature\, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming\, the eternal and the ephemeral\, the solace and the sublime.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th\, 2023. \nPart 2 A Shadow Out of the Noise\nA hyper-visceral experience is created by Beck+Col’s avant-garde use of opera\, heavy metal\, and fantastical wearable sculptures in their otherworldly performances. Creating overwhelming sensations that employ both the visual and auditory in decidedly non-traditional contexts\, Beck+Col unleash the inner-self to arrive at raw and unrestrained human experience. For this performance of Part Two! a shadow out of the noise\, Beck+Col play on the gothic concept of the double\, exploring the horror that arises from the appearance of one’s exact duplicate. A followup to part one in which a single being is split into two mirrored images by a dark outside force\, Part Two! follows them on a chaotic path desperately trying to reunite in the underworld.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th\, 2023. The performance by Beck+Col will include performers Nadia Maryam and Tetiana Skylarova and feature choreography by Kayla Aguila and Tetiana Skylarova.\nThe gallery is open to the public Thursday – Saturday from 10am to 4pm. SUMMARY:Notions of Place-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Notions of Place \nArtists Talk 2:30 pm \nDrawing on dreams\, memories\, and the spaces in between\, the works in Notions of Place disintegrate commonly held social views that have acted as fences around our homes. Each of the artists in the exhibition articulate different facets of what we call place. Place can be a refuge\, a home holding our values and dreams in safe harbor. It can also be defined by a border or a wall holding us back from a new life. In ways that are both spiritual and physical\, Notions of Place explores the contours of the artist’s experience of the world. \nCurated by Lauren Kasmer\, Notions of Place includes works by Hilary Baker\, Joyce Dallal\, Natalie M. Godinez\, Kio Griffith\, Flora Kao\, Lauren Kasmer\, LaRissa Rogers\, Jenny Yurshansky\, and HK Zamani. \nSaturday\, June 17th\, 2:30pm: Artist Talk & Closing Reception RSVP
