SUMMARY:Meet the Grunion-Cabrillo Beach
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Grunion\n Spend a night sitting on Southern California’s sandy shore waiting for the “grunion run.” Grunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family\, which are among the few species of fish that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches. They are found from Southern California south to Baja California and arrive at night after the high tide around the new moon and full moon. Cabrillo Beach is one of the better places to observe the fish. \nUpcoming Grunion Runs \nMeet the Grunion\nWatch silvery fish come up on the beach to spawn! Learn about the interesting mating rituals and growth of this curious fish. The Aquarium opens at 8pm followed by guided observation at the beach. \nWarm clothing and a flashlight are recommended. April\, May and June are closed season\, grunion may not be taken.

SUMMARY:Lucile Jones/Resilience in the Face of Climate Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Lucile Jones – Preacher and Presenter\nSt. Peter’s Episcopal Church\n10 a.m.\, May 21\, 2023 \nLucile M. Jones is a seismologist and public voice for earthquake science and earthquake safety in California. One of the foremost and trusted public authorities on earthquakes\, Jones is viewed by many in Southern California as the “seismologist-next-door” who is frequently called upon to provide information on recent earthquakes. She is currently a research associate at the Seismological Laboratory at Caltech\, chief scientist and founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society and is spearheading the Bishop’s Commission on disaster resiliency work in local congregations. This program which eventually will be available to all churches\, relies heavily on relational connectivity to build resilience in the face of climate disasters\, not only in terms of clean energy possibilities\, but also in times of crisis. \nThe primary address is during the service\, with a question-and-answer session afterwards. \nSt Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 1648 W. 9th Street\, San Pedro\, CA 90732

SUMMARY:Intertidal Encounters: Reefs-ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Intertidal Encounters: Reefs\nLive on zoom: Wednesday\, September 28th\n5:30pm – 7pm PT \nIntertidal Encounters: Reefs on September 28th will explore the importance of biodiverse reefs and coastal ecosystems. Artist Courtney Mattison and scientist/co-founder of Blue Latitudes\, Amber Sparks\, will be in discussion with AAW artist fellow Taylor Griffith. This limited series instigates exploratory dialogue that considers our natural world through the complementary\, yet divergent perspectives of art and science. We hope these interactive conversations develop our shared community understanding of the urgency of our rapidly changing climate\, and prompt us to action.\nThis free public program is presented in conjunction with Artist At Work (AAW)\, a workforce resilience program designed to support the rebuilding of healthy communities through artistic civic engagement.\nRegister on eventbrite.
