DESCRIPTION:May 27 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm\nDate: Thursday\, May 27th\, 4:00 PM \nTo register\, click here. \nSpeakers: \nProf. Brian Beale\, Cooperating Professor of Marine Ecology\, Research Director of Downeast Institute\, University of Maine \nDr. Beal is a professor of marine ecology at the University of Maine at Machias (UMM). His position at UMM is divided equally between teaching and research\,  and includes his work at DEI.  In addition\, Dr. Beal directs UMM’s Marine Field Station at Black Duck Cove. \nA native of Jonesport\, Maine\, Dr. Beal graduated from UMM in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Biology and went on to earn an M.S. degree in Marine Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He obtained a Ph.D. in Marine Bio-Resources from the University of Maine at Orono. \nDr. Beal was instrumental in establishing Maine’s first lobster hatchery in the town of Cutler in 1986. He worked with clammers and shellfish committees in six Washington County towns to create Maine’s first public clam hatchery in 1987\, known as the Beals Island Regional Shellfish Hatchery. Dr. Beal is known for his work with soft-shell clams throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada. He was a 2000-2001 Fulbright scholar at the National University of Ireland\, Galway where he worked with Irish fishermen and researchers on ocean-based nurseries for cultured European lobster (Homarus gammarus) juveniles. \nPeter Bryant\, Senior Program Officer\, Walton Personal Philanthropy Group and The Builders Initiative \nPeter Bryant is a senior program officer focused on strategy development\, environmental grant-making\, and impact investment opportunities for the Walton Personal Philanthropy Group and The Builders Initiative\, a new foundation established by a third generation member of the Walton family. Within these institutions\, Peter is focused on the oceans sustainability\, including fisheries management\, aquaculture\, ocean conservation\, and climate resilience work. Peter also leads an impact investing strategy for the office\, which is focused on early stage investment opportunities in businesses and funds that seek to improve oceans health. \nPreviously\, Peter spent nine years at the Walton Family Foundation managing ocean and fisheries grant-making within the Environment Program with a focus on international geographies\, including Indonesia\, Chile\, Mexico\, and Costa Rica. Peter has more than 20 years’ experience in freshwater and marine conservation\, previously managing programs on river conservation and marine fisheries at several organizations\, including The Nature Conservancy and World Wildlife Fund. Early in his career\, Peter focused on corporate partnerships for conservation and communications and marketing. \nPeter received his undergraduate degree in economics from Colby College and has a Master’s in environmental management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He lives with his children in Carlsbad\, California. \nThierry Chopin\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Marine Biology\, University of New Brunswick\, Saint John\, Canada \nDr. Thierry Chopin was born and educated in France. He obtained his Doctorate from the University of Western Brittany\, Brest\, France. He moved to Canada in 1989 and is presently Professor of Marine Biology at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. \nDr. Chopin’s research focuses on the ecophysiology\, biochemistry and cultivation of seaweeds of commercial value and the development of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems for environmental sustainability (nutrient biomitigation and other ecosystem services\, and green technologies for improved ecosystem health)\, economic stability (improved output\, product diversification\, risk reduction and job creation in coastal communities) and societal acceptability (better management practices\, improved regulatory governance and appreciation of differentiated and safe products). \nDr. Chopin was\, from 2010 to 2017\, the Scientific Director of the Canadian Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture Network (CIMTAN)\, an interdisciplinary strategic network of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). \nHe created the company Chopin Coastal Health Solutions Inc. in July 2016 and is its President. \nDr. Chopin is Past President of the Aquaculture Association of Canada\, the Phycological Society of America and the International Seaweed Association. He is an advisor to the International Foundation for Science and a member of the Editorial Boards of six journals and one professional magazine. He is a columnist with International Aquafeed. \nDr. Chopin is the recipient of the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation\, the Aquaculture Association of Canada Research Award of Excellence\, the New Brunswick BioSciences Achievement Award\, the R3 (Research\, Results\, Recognition) Award of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation\, and the Coup de Coeur Award of the Conseil Economique du Nouveau-Brunswick. \nDr. Chopin is Honorary Consul of France and Chevalier in the Ordre National du Mérite\, the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and the Ordre du Mérite Maritime. \nModerator: \nVal Zavala \nVal Zavala was anchor and executive producer of “SoCal Connected” until her retirement in 2018. Since joining KCET in 1987 she has won 15 L.A. Emmy awards. She has covered major issues in southern California politics\, education\, government\, demographics\, healthcare\, environment\, economy\, and arts and culture. She has been honored for her community service by numerous organizations including the California Chicano News Media Association\, and Hispanic Americans for Fairness in Media among others. She was a John S. Knight Journalism fellow at Stanford University in 1993. She received her M.A. in journalism from American University and her B.A. in Latin American Studies from Yale University.

SUMMARY:Port of Los Angeles to Host Virtual Clean Truck Program Update
DESCRIPTION:The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) will host a Clean Truck Program 2021 Concession Agreement Update on Wednesday\, March 17\, at 9 a.m. via Zoom. POLA currently has concession agreements with approximately 1\,100 Licensed Motor Carriers (LMCs)\, which must be replaced before they expire on September 30\, 2021.  \nPOLA Environmental Management staff plans to provide program background and information about the process for developing the next POLA Concession Agreement prior to the current concessions’ expiration date of September 30. The meeting will include an open discussion and an opportunity to ask questions. \nThose interested in attending should register here. Alternatively\, attendees can call into the meeting at 888-475-4499\, using the Meeting ID 979 6114 9333 and passcode 556860.  \nA central element of the Clean Truck Program\, the POLA Concession Program establishes a contractual relationship between the Port of Los Angeles and LMCs operating at its terminals. All LMCs making regular calls at POLA container terminals are required to have a pending or approved POLA concession agreement. The Port of Long Beach (POLB) has a separately administered motor carrier registration program. \nEstablished in 2008 as part of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan\, the Clean Truck Program has reduced air pollution from harbor trucks by more than 90%. North America’s leading seaport by container volume and cargo value\, the Port of Los Angeles facilitated $276 billion in trade during 2019. Please reserve a ticket through Eventbrite to receive the Zoom link.\nAbout this Event\nThe Risks of Climate Change on the Most Vulnerable Species and Ecosystems \nBy Dr. Nina Bednarsek\, SCCWRP \nThe negative effects of climate change on the global oceans are rapidly intensifying with respect to ocean acidification\, oxygen decline and warming\, and are resulting in decline in suitable habitats for the vulnerable species. These effects are taking place from the coasts to the open ocean across the tropics to the poles\, with California coast being one of the most susceptible regions for future climate change\, which is disconcerting given its richest fisheries and most diverse marine ecosystems. In fact\, the effects on marine organisms are already observed in the California waters\, impacting ecologically and economically important marine calcifiers\, such as sea butterfly\, Dungeness crabs\, sea urchins. This talk will take the audience to explore the drivers and mechanisms that make marine species vulnerable to climate change and provide insights on how we are able to detect such changes and link it directly to human-made climate change. By integrating observations\, modelling and experimental work\, we will show which habitats and when the climate change effects on marine biota will be most intense\, or alternatively where are the marine refugia that needs to be protected. Understanding the overall risks on the fisheries and ecosystem services allows for better management and adaptation in the face of climate change\, and we will show how marine vegetation can offer some mitigation potential against ocean acidification.

DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity in Our Ocean — A Natural History Museum Vision\nBy Dean Pentcheff and Dr. Regina Wetzer\, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County \nNatural history museums: stuffed animals\, dinosaurs\, and dust\, right? That’s not the whole story (though\, truth be told\, we’ve got all those\, too). Natural history museums are\, it turns out\, drivers of exciting new developments in biodiversity science. As the world changes and populations increase\, we need new ways to see how our presence on the coast affects (and can benefit from) the ocean’s biodiversity. New genetic approaches\, using “environmental DNA”\, promise to let us inventory our biological surroundings\, including our coastal communities\, with unprecedented detail and speed. Tools like these will be essential for managing development of our coast. Researchers at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are using the coastline of Long Beach\, San Pedro\, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula as a testbed for these important new technologies — building new ways to view our ocean while learning more about our marine neighborhood.

Everyone in the family will enjoy a Naturalist guided walk through our Tongva Demonstration Garden where you’ll learn how early inhabitants used native plants for survival. Then walk through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat with views of Catalina.  For those interested in the military history of the area\, continue to walk up to a WWII gun emplacement. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to help International Bird Rescue celebrate 2019 Bird L.A. Day on May 4th at our Los Angeles Wildlife Center. We will have crafts\, special presentations\, a gift shop\, and educational booths where you can learn more about the waterbirds that we care for and how you can take action to protect them. The event runs from 10 AM to 2 PM. \nJoining us at our location in San Pedro will be our friends from Wild Birds Unlimited\, Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy\, Tree Care for Birds and Other Wildlife\, Ánimo Leadership Charter High School\, Angels Gate Cultural Center\, 5 Gyres\, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium\, and the El Dorado Nature Center. \nStarting at 11 AM\, Bird Rescue will welcome our Executive Director JD Bergeron and local partners for presentations at the center. JD will share information about our programs including wildlife rehabilitation and oil spill response. Also the Marine Biology and Environmental Club from Amino High School will discuss plastic pollution’s impact on wildlife\, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will share their bird focused programs including the cactus wren citizen science project. \nWe will also have art activities led by artists from the Angels Gate Cultural Center and a DIY activity and presentation on the Zero Waste Lifestyle with Chi Le and Maciej Lisiak. \nA special wildlife watching evening sail is being offered by our friends at Lami Topsail from 5:00 – 7:30 PM with special discounts for Bird LA Day guests.
