SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture-Risks of Climate Change on the Most Vulnerable Species and Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE Discovery Lecture online! Please reserve a ticket through Eventbrite to receive the Zoom link.\nAbout this Event\nThe Risks of Climate Change on the Most Vulnerable Species and Ecosystems \nBy Dr. Nina Bednarsek\, SCCWRP \nThe negative effects of climate change on the global oceans are rapidly intensifying with respect to ocean acidification\, oxygen decline and warming\, and are resulting in decline in suitable habitats for the vulnerable species. These effects are taking place from the coasts to the open ocean across the tropics to the poles\, with California coast being one of the most susceptible regions for future climate change\, which is disconcerting given its richest fisheries and most diverse marine ecosystems. In fact\, the effects on marine organisms are already observed in the California waters\, impacting ecologically and economically important marine calcifiers\, such as sea butterfly\, Dungeness crabs\, sea urchins. This talk will take the audience to explore the drivers and mechanisms that make marine species vulnerable to climate change and provide insights on how we are able to detect such changes and link it directly to human-made climate change. By integrating observations\, modelling and experimental work\, we will show which habitats and when the climate change effects on marine biota will be most intense\, or alternatively where are the marine refugia that needs to be protected. Understanding the overall risks on the fisheries and ecosystem services allows for better management and adaptation in the face of climate change\, and we will show how marine vegetation can offer some mitigation potential against ocean acidification.

SUMMARY:Biodiversity in Our Ocean-Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity in Our Ocean — A Natural History Museum Vision\nBy Dean Pentcheff and Dr. Regina Wetzer\, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County \nNatural history museums: stuffed animals\, dinosaurs\, and dust\, right? That’s not the whole story (though\, truth be told\, we’ve got all those\, too). Natural history museums are\, it turns out\, drivers of exciting new developments in biodiversity science. As the world changes and populations increase\, we need new ways to see how our presence on the coast affects (and can benefit from) the ocean’s biodiversity. New genetic approaches\, using “environmental DNA”\, promise to let us inventory our biological surroundings\, including our coastal communities\, with unprecedented detail and speed. Tools like these will be essential for managing development of our coast. Researchers at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are using the coastline of Long Beach\, San Pedro\, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula as a testbed for these important new technologies — building new ways to view our ocean while learning more about our marine neighborhood.

SUMMARY:AltaSea Open House
DESCRIPTION:Quarterly Open House\nFeaturing\nHelena’s founder\, Henry Elkus\nand\nDr. Branwen Williams\, Claremont College \nHelena brings world-wide thought leaders together to focus on addressing issues of global importance and creating innovations that yield significant positive impact. They believe that small groups of brilliant and capable leaders can solve intractable problems. Helena’s “Factory in the Sky” Project supported the development and construction of the world’s first commercial carbon-capture factory\, and its “Shield Project” catalyzed state and federal action to help protect the North American Electrical grid from threats due to solar storms and cyber-attack.\nDr. Williams’ work generates records of our past ocean and climate variability\, and uses these records to understand mechanisms driving environmental changes. SUMMARY:Ports Clean Air Action Plan Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Fourth Public Advisory Meeting of 2018 to be Held in Wilmington \nThe fourth advisory meeting of 2018 to offer information on progress of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan 2017 Update (2017 CAAP Update) is scheduled for Wednesday\, December 19\, in Wilmington. \nUp to four CAAP stakeholder advisory meetings a year were called for as part of the 2017 CAAP Update approved by the Long Beach and Los Angeles Boards of Harbor Commissioners on November 2\, 2017. Meetings were previously held in Long Beach on March 29 and September 19\, and in San Pedro on June 26. \nThe next advisory meeting will take place on Wednesday\, December 19\, from 10 a.m. to noon\, at the Banning’s Landing\, 100 E. Water Street\, in Wilmington. The meeting is open to the public. \nThe 2017 CAAP Update contains a comprehensive strategy for accelerating progress toward a zero-emission future while protecting and strengthening the ports’ competitive position in the global economy. Since 2005\, port-related air pollution emissions in San Pedro Bay have dropped 87 percent for diesel particulate matter\, 58 percent for nitrogen oxides\, and 97 percent for sulfur oxides. Targets for reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) from port-related sources were introduced as part of the 2017 CAAP Update. The document calls for the ports to reduce GHGs 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. The Clean Air Action Plan was originally approved in 2006. \nAt this advisory meeting\, staff from the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach will discuss updates on the new Clean Truck Program\, technology feasibility assessments and technology demonstrations\, and information on regulatory developments. Public comment will be taken to receive input on CAAP implementation issues. Information on CAAP progress through the 3rd quarter of 2018 can be found online here. \nFor more information\, go to www.cleanairactionplan.org\nThe Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach are the two largest ports in the nation\, first and second respectively\, and combined are the ninth-largest port complex in the world. The two ports handle nearly 40 percent of the nation’s total containerized import traffic and 25 percent of its total exports. Trade that flows through the San Pedro Bay ports complex generates more than 3 million jobs nationwide.

SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture Series-Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Warming oceans\, melting ice\, and rising seas \nBy Dr. Ian Fenty\, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory \nNASA’s measurements of Earth’s atmosphere\, oceans\, and ice show evidence of accelerating global warming. Increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere due to human activity have caused the oceans to warm and the polar ice sheets and high mountain glaciers to melt. Ocean warming\, melting glaciers\, and melting ice sheets are driving up global sea levels at a rate not seen since the end of the last ice age. In this presentation\, I will review the evidence of ocean warming\, ice melting\, and global sea level rise\, discuss current projections of future global sea level rise\, and describe some current NASA research to study the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet. \nDr. Ian Fenty received his Ph.D. in Climate Physics and Chemistry from MIT in 2010 and now works at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a climate scientist. In his research Dr. Fenty collaborates with JPL oceanographers\, glaciologists\, and other scientists to reconstruct the circulation of Earth’s high-latitude oceans over the past two decades. In addition\, Dr. Fenty is a co-investigator of NASA’s “Oceans Melting Greenland” mission.
