DESCRIPTION:Fourth Public Advisory Meeting of 2018 to be Held in Wilmington \nThe fourth advisory meeting of 2018 to offer information on progress of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan 2017 Update (2017 CAAP Update) is scheduled for Wednesday\, December 19\, in Wilmington. \nUp to four CAAP stakeholder advisory meetings a year were called for as part of the 2017 CAAP Update approved by the Long Beach and Los Angeles Boards of Harbor Commissioners on November 2\, 2017. Meetings were previously held in Long Beach on March 29 and September 19\, and in San Pedro on June 26. \nThe next advisory meeting will take place on Wednesday\, December 19\, from 10 a.m. to noon\, at the Banning’s Landing\, 100 E. Water Street\, in Wilmington.  The meeting is open to the public. \nThe 2017 CAAP Update contains a comprehensive strategy for accelerating progress toward a zero-emission future while protecting and strengthening the ports’ competitive position in the global economy. Since 2005\, port-related air pollution emissions in San Pedro Bay have dropped 87 percent for diesel particulate matter\, 58 percent for nitrogen oxides\, and 97 percent for sulfur oxides. Targets for reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) from port-related sources were introduced as part of the 2017 CAAP Update. The document calls for the ports to reduce GHGs 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. The Clean Air Action Plan was originally approved in 2006. \nAt this advisory meeting\, staff from the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach will discuss updates on the new Clean Truck Program\, technology feasibility assessments and technology demonstrations\, and information on regulatory developments. Public comment will be taken to receive input on CAAP implementation issues. Information on CAAP progress through the 3rd quarter of 2018 can be found online here. \nFor more information\, go to www.cleanairactionplan.org\nThe Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach are the two largest ports in the nation\, first and second respectively\, and combined are the ninth-largest port complex in the world. The two ports handle nearly 40 percent of the nation’s total containerized import traffic and 25 percent of its total exports. Trade that flows through the San Pedro Bay ports complex generates more than 3 million jobs nationwide.

SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture Series-Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Warming oceans\, melting ice\, and rising seas \nBy Dr. Ian Fenty\, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory \nNASA’s measurements of Earth’s atmosphere\, oceans\, and ice show evidence of accelerating global warming. Increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere due to human activity have caused the oceans to warm and the polar ice sheets and high mountain glaciers to melt. Ocean warming\, melting glaciers\, and melting ice sheets are driving up global sea levels at a rate not seen since the end of the last ice age. In this presentation\, I will review the evidence of ocean warming\, ice melting\, and global sea level rise\, discuss current projections of future global sea level rise\, and describe some current NASA research to study the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet. \nDr. Ian Fenty received his Ph.D. in Climate Physics and Chemistry from MIT in 2010 and now works at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a climate scientist. In his research Dr. Fenty collaborates with JPL oceanographers\, glaciologists\, and other scientists to reconstruct the circulation of Earth’s high-latitude oceans over the past two decades. In addition\, Dr. Fenty is a co-investigator of NASA’s “Oceans Melting Greenland” mission.

The salt marsh will be open from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.\, giving ample time to learn more about the local native plants and animals\, including birds\, fish\, crabs\, worms and more. Bring your binoculars\, camera\, sketch pad\, journal or just your curiosity!\n	While you’re here visit the Aquarium’s Library\, Aquatic Nursery\, Exploration Center\, and the Suzanne Lawrence-Miller Exhibit Hall to view our amazing animals and exhibits. Also\, plan to stop by CMA’s volunteer-run gift shop for a wide selection of gifts and books.\n	The Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro and is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with support from Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.  Open to the public on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Journey with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s education staff on an adventure to Santa Rosa Island\, part of the Channel Islands National Park.  \nHailed by scientists as the “California Galapagos\,” trips to the coastal Channel Islands offer impressive glimpses into California’s rich human and natural history in addition to the amazing endemic animal and plant species found nowhere else on earth. \nOn the boat voyage to the island\, we will keep a weathered eye out for pelagic birds\, pinnipeds\, dolphins and whales. On the island\, participants will have the opportunity to follow along on a naturalist led hike (by CMA education staff and CINP volunteers) to observe the diverse coastal habitats\, amazing geologic formations\, unique animal and plant life\, human history and fantastic panoramic views that this exceptional island has to offer. Participants will board a boat in Ventura at 7:30am and return approximately at 6:30pm \nPLEASE NOTE: Island activities are very strenuous. Moderate physical agility is required of all passengers to climb a short ladder off of the boat to the pier. Once on the island\, the hikes will take place on loose sand and gravel along cliffs and canyons with various elevation changes. Please judge your ability and fitness accordingly. \nAdventure fee:\n$82 for adults\n$74 for seniors\n$70 for Friends members\n$65 for children \nReservations are required. SUMMARY:See the Sea\, Si? Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the water for a floating oceanography lab! This hands-on trip will be aboard a specially equipped vessel where you’ll have opportunities to study some of the near shore animals. Learn about the fascinating world of plankton\, animals that call mud their home and some of the fish that prefer the sandy bottom. \nThe trip starts with a “fish-eye” view of the underwater world living on and around the dock\, which will be revealed by an underwater camera. Passengers will be able to watch this real-time ocean documentary featuring sea anemones\, sea stars\, tunicates\, and fish via monitors on the boat. \nOnce the boat enters the harbor\, a specialized net called an otter trawl will be set. Any fishes collected with this net will be placed in tanks on the boat giving passengers up close and personal looks at several types of flatfish\, perch and croaker.  \nA trap will also be set on the ocean floor to try to catch sand bass\, scorpion fish\, crabs and other bottom-dwelling critters. Critters caught in the trap will be displayed onboard giving everyone a chance to touch some of the animals. \nPre-registration is required. Panelists Jon Christensen (Professor\, UCLA Institute for the Environment and Sustainability)\, Glen Dake (Landscape Architect) and Gregory Cesena (Janice Hahn deputy) will discuss how art making can increase environmental awareness.
