He will swim eight hours a day\, then recuperate the rest of each day on The Discoverer\, the 67-foot sailboat carrying his support team and supplies. \nAlong the way\, Lecomte’s team will collect and store thousands of samples of ocean water and biometric data about Lecomte\, on behalf of a variety of major science organizations researching the condition of the ocean and its impacts on sea life and humans. \nTo help kick off pre-swim preparations\, Lecomte will be featured at the quarterly open house for AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles. The open house begins at 10 am\, Sept. 16\, at Berth 58 in the port\, at 2456 S. Signal St. in San Pedro\, Calif. It is open to the public\, but reservations are required. SUMMARY:Ports Host Joint Clean Air Action Plan Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will hold a joint public workshop at 5 p.m.\, Wednesday\, Aug. 30\, to offer the public an opportunity to comment on the recently released draft update of the Clean Air Action Plan\, or CAAP. The public workshop will be held at Banning’s Landing Community Center\, 100 E. Water St. in Wilmington. \nParticipants interested in commenting at the workshop may do so by providing verbal comments at the microphone (up to three minutes per speaker) and/or submitting written comments on a comment card. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available at the meeting. The meeting can also be viewed via live webcast on both of the ports’ websites and the CAAP site. \nIn addition\, written comments may be submitted via email to caap@cleanairactionplan.org until 5 p.m. on Sept. 18\, 2017. A joint meeting of the two ports’ Harbor Commissions is planned in November to consider the final draft. Interested parties are encouraged to register on the CAAP website to receive the latest information and meeting notices. \nThe draft CAAP 2017 Discussion Document is available here.

Olguin Auditorium.\nGuest Speaker: Stephen Weisberg\, Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) \nAdvances in beach water quality monitoring \nBeach water quality monitoring has undergone a huge transformation in the last two decades as we have started to transition from traditional culture-based methods to genomic-based methods for quantifying bacteria. These new methods allow us to provide answers more quickly\, leading to a better warning system for the public. Genetic information captured by these new molecular methods also allows us to better define what type of animal served as the fecal source when contamination occurs.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Sierra Club is honored to present Dr. Constance M. Vadheim\,  Emeritus Professor of Biology\, CSUDH who will discuss a topic that affects all of us.  From hotter global temperatures\, to droughts and erratic weather patterns\, the evidence supporting climate change is occurring all around us.   But sometimes it’s difficult to apply the long-term projections to life closer to home.  In this talk\, Dr. Vadheim will discuss the likely consequences of climate change in the South Bay and the rest of Western Los Angeles County.  She will present evidence suggesting likely changes on local temperature\, precipitation\, wind patterns and air pollution.   More importantly\, she’ll then predict the consequences of these changes on local plant\, animal and microbial life.   She will present scenarios from local green space areas as well as home gardens and food production. \nPlease join us April 26  at 7 PM in the community room of the Palos Verdes Library .  Refreshments will be served – for more info contact Joyce White 310-383-5247
