Invited City of Los Angeles dignitaries\, veterans\, active military and Battleship IOWA Museum VIPs will be onboard to speak about the national day of remembrance as well as honor visiting military.  \n“Battleship IOWA’s Memorial Day Remembrance is one of the most venerable events aboard\,” shared Jonathan Williams\, President and CEO of the Battleship IOWA Museum. “We are honored to bring the community together to recognize and pay tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country.” \nTo begin the Memorial Day Remembrance\, a moving commemoration ceremony will start at approximately 10 a.m. featuring invited local elected officials and Battleship IOWA Museum staff. Guests who come aboard will have the opportunity to donate $5 for a flag to hang along the pier fence\, allowing the red\, white\, and blue banner to wave in honor of those who have fallen.  \nFollowing the Remembrance Ceremony\, Battleship IOWA Museum will offer a full schedule of activities and entertainment for the entire family. Free Pierside Memorial Day events include a patriotic dance performance by San Pedro City Ballet\, arts and crafts activities in the Kids’ Zone\, live music with patriotic songs by local rock band U.S. 99\, military vehicles on display\, and much more. Guests will be able to purchase food from visiting food trucks and beer tastings from San Pedro Brewing. Olguin Auditorium.  \nFor more information and scheduled speakers\, please visit the ACS-LA website. \nTonight’s Topic\nCalifornia Sea Lions: how many are there and what do they eat (with notes on other pinnipeds) will be presented by Mark Lowry. \nCalifornia sea lions are the most numerous pinniped species in California. Since 1975\, the population in the U.S. grew at an average annual rate of 7% and went from 89\,000 animals in 1975 to 257\,000 in 2014 with a peak of 306\,000 in 2012.  Sea lions at the Channel Islands in southern California foraged on northern anchovy\, market squid\, Pacific hake\, Pacific mackerel\, Pacific sardine\, shortbelly rockfish\, and Pacific mackerel; as well as an assortment of other fish and cephalopods.  California sea lion diet shifted from an anchovy-based diet in the 1980s to a market squid based-diet in the 1990s and 2000s\, with other prey-taxon taking their place when consumption of those two prey-taxon diminished.  Prey taxa represented epipelagic species\, epipelagic-mesopelagic species\, and benthic-demersal species.  Also\, the northern elephant seal population continued to grow since it was nearly extirpated in the 19thand 20thcenturies\, and the Pacific harbor seal population grew initially but currently appears to be stabilizing.

Produced by the artist group FLOOD\, this signature event\, featuring single and multi-media sound artists\, is gaining momentum. Preparations are underway for soundpedro 2019 scheduled for June 1\, from 6pm to 10pm.\nAngels Gate Cultural Center is located on Native American land atop a rugged bluff overlooking the Port of Los Angeles\, Catalina Island\, and the Pacific Ocean. During the 1940s this ten-acre hilltop site was part of the Fort MacArthur military base. It is now a thriving sanctuary for the arts. The artists of soundpedro activate\, in surprising ways\, this unique site–both indoors and out.\nUnlike music\, sound art is the aural equivalent of cinema\, painting\, theater\, sculpture\, and literature. “Sound art” as a term was first coined in 1982. Since then artists have taken the genre in a variety of directions. Reframing the act of listening\, sound works and performances explore the progression of sound from hearing to experience.\nThis year’s event will add greater conceptual breadth to soundpedro by moving beyond sound to “ear orientation”. On October 1\, 2018\, an international call for submissions was issued requesting silent videos that explore and synthesize ideas and images responding to aurality. The general call for soundpedro was issued in December\, 2018. Please see soundpedro.org for details of both soundpedro and Earmagination.\nThe deadline for submissions for both calls is February 14th.\nAbout FLOOD\nThe artist group FLOOD has been working together on projects for the last nineteen years.
