SUMMARY:4th Annual Horton's Hayride
DESCRIPTION:The 4th Annual Horton’s Hayride returns to Berth 46 at The Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro\, CA on Saturday\, September 16. \nJoin your host\, Reverend Horton Heat\, for an action packed day of live music\, a classic car & hot rod contest\, the Southland’s best food trucks\, full bars and shop at some of the South Bay’s best retail vendors. \nTickets go on sale Friday\, May 19 @ 10:00AM Pacific Standard Time through TicketWeb.com or by calling 1-866-468-3399. \nLoaded .38s\, space heaters\, and big skies. Welcome to the lethal\, littered landscape of Jim Heath’s imagination. True to his high evangelical calling\, Jim is a Revelator\, both revealing & reinterpreting the country-blues-rock roots of American music. He’s a time-travelling space-cowboy on an endless interstellar musical tour\, and we are all the richer and “psychobillier” for getting to tag along. \nSeeing REVEREND HORTON HEAT live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock ‘n roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. Jim becomes a slicked-back 1950?s rock ‘n roll shaman channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins through Buddy Holly\, while Jimbo incinerates the Stand-Up Bass. And then there are the “Heatettes”. Those foxy rockabilly chicks dressed in poodle-skirts and cowboy boots slamming the night away. It’s like being magically transported into a Teen Exploitation picture from the 1950s that’s currently taking place in the future. \nListening to the REVEREND HORTON HEAT is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot-rod engine of your heart. The Reverend’s commandants are simple. Rock hard\, drive fast\, and live true. And no band on this\, or any other\, planet rocks harder\, drives faster\, or lives truer than the Reverend Horton Heat. These itinerant preachers actually practice what they preach. They live their lives by the Gospel of Rock ‘n Roll.

SUMMARY:Coastal/Border
DESCRIPTION:Coastal/Border is an exhibition of original site-responsive performance and installation work with corresponding public programming curated by Raquel Gutiérrez and Martabel Wasserman. Taking as its starting point the landscape and history of the area surrounding Angels Gate Cultural Center\, six Southern California based artists will interrogate how the coast is fortified as border\, and how in turn that impacts the Latino/Latina communities of Los Angeles and beyond. In asking artists to develop a performance or public programming component of their work\, the curators seek to emphasize the ways in which historical connections between Los Angeles and Latin America are embodied in the present. \nCoastal/Border will be open to the public September 16th and run through December 17th 2017 at Angels Gate Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:"from sea to shining sea"
DESCRIPTION:“from sea to shining sea” (FSTSS) is a sculpture\, video and sound installation that takes a site-specific choir performance as a departure point. The a href=”http://www.c3la.org/” target=”_blank”>C3LA Choir will perform at White Point Military Reservation\, within a decommissioned long range naval gun casemate where guns were never fired for their intended purpose. The final installation will move into Angels Gate Cultural Center\, reconstructing the spatial and theatrical context of the live performance piece as a sculpture\, video and sound installation. Borrowing its title from the last line of the song “America the Beautiful”\, the project utilizes declassified logistics data from White Point Military Reservation as parameters to deconstruct and rearrange the song. Through the process of breaking down language by isolating and reorganizing the musical and linguistic components of “America the Beautiful”\, the piece reconsiders the song’s history\, to subvert its poetic\, benevolent\, and hopeful narrative. The project responds to San Pedro’s militarization process as a coastal city and the historical significance of the site. With a rich history of immigrant populations\, San Pedro’s history also aligns with WWII notions of national security\, as they still relate today to patriotism and xenophobia. FSTSS connects the history of this militarized\, man-made landscape to the normalization of the U.S.’s exceptionalism to legitimize military interventions worldwide\, and its ambivalent relationship to the displacement of immigrants and refugees\, often a direct result of such interventions. FSTSS repurposes a site of military destruction\, reclaiming the space through a collective audio-visual experience. There will be two performances:\nSaturday September 9 2017\n6:30\n7:00\nLocation:\nPaul D. Bunker Battery\nWhite Point Nature Preserve\n1600 W Paseo Del Mar\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 There is no car access to the site\, so please plan accordingly. Bring comfortable shoes and allow at least 45 minutes after arrival by car\, as there is a hike from the parking lot at the White Point Natural Preserve to the site of the performance at the top of the hill\, the Paul D. Bunker Battery on the East side.

In these uncertain times\, with the rapid destruction of Mother Earth\, the deterioration of the natural world through global warming\, the contamination of water\, the pollution of air; the ecological consequences are inevitable. The return of our spiritual connection to ceremony\, prayer\, and Indigenous philosophy will ultimately be our survival. The Elders will be addressing these vital issues and how we must return to the original teachings of our ancestors for our survival as human beings and the survival of all living things. The wisdom of our elders can enable one to come into atonement and find harmony and peace within their environment and within themselves. This event is for those people who love the Mother Earth and care about her survival. October 12-15\, 2017\, Angels Gate Cultural Center.
