SUMMARY:Meet the Grunion at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will be offering a “Meet the Grunion” program Tuesday\, April 17\, 2018.  The program will be offered again on May 1st.  The Aquarium will open at 8 p.m. and a film on grunion begins at 9 p.m. in the John M. Olguin Auditorium.  Prior to the predicted run\, everyone will gather on the beach to await the grunion.  The program cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors\, students\, and children.  Warm clothing is recommended.\nGrunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family\, which are one of the few fish species in the world that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches.  They are found from central California through Baja California\, with Cabrillo Beach being one of the better places to observe the fish.\nAt times the beach may look as if it is covered in a blanket of silver as the wriggling fish arrive to mate.  The females burrow into the sand to lay eggs while the males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs.  The fertilized eggs incubate for about 9 days in the sand before the tumbling action of the waves from the next series of highest tides cause them to hatch\, and carries them back out to sea.\nGrunion may be caught by hand in the months of March\, June\, and July which is the open season; grunion catchers 16 years and older must have a valid California fishing license.  During April and May grunion may be observed\, but not captured.

DESCRIPTION:New Exhibit at the Museum \n“A Day in a Life of a Japanese American Fishing Village”  \n“In the early 20th-century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish.  Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally form the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor.  \nAfter the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and America’s subsequent entry into World War II\, the entire Terminal Island community was relocated to internment camps\, but the residents never forgot their beloved Terminal Island village. Today\, the Terminal Islanders Club\, a group of former residents and their descendants\, preserve the history and friendships of this lost community.  \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. SUMMARY:Terminal Islanders to Celebrate 15th Anniversary of Memorial Monument
DESCRIPTION:“The Terminal Islanders and the Port of Los Angeles will be celebrating 15 years since the dedication of the Memorial Monument on Sunday\, April 15\, at 10 a.m. at 1124 S. Seaside in San Pedro. The event is open to the public. \nCompleted in 2002\, the Terminal Island monument is the only art piece on Terminal Island. It is dedicated to the 3\,000 Issei and Nisei who made their home there and worked in the fishing industry\, either on the boats or in the canneries. \nIn February 1942\, they were the first Japanese Americans on the West Coast to be rounded up and incarcerated\, with only 48 hours’ notice. In their absence\, the village was stripped of anything of value and bulldozed\, and the boats were stolen or destroyed. After the war\, the former residents stayed in touch with each other and tried to keep the memories of Terminal Island alive. \nThere will be a call to order by Kokoro Taiko\, followed by the presentation of colors by Long Beach Polytechnic High School JROTC. The master of ceremonies will be Terry Hara\, former LAPD deputy chief. Midori Sanchez will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Kelsey Kwong will sing the national anthem. \nA history of the Terminal Island Memorial Monument will be presented by architects from Gruen Associates\, Michael A. Enomoto and Craig Biggi\, who designed it and oversaw its construction. \nA special commemorative T-shirt will be available for $ 15 and a vintage Terminal Island gift basket will be raffled. Also\, for the first time since the dedication of the monument\, information will be available for individuals and families to add names to the monument plaques. \nAdditionally\, this will be the final opportunity to add items relating to Terminal Island to a time capsule that will be placed in a vault at the base of the monument and sealed. \nAt noon\, the attendees are invited to proceed to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro for bento lunch and the dedication of its new Terminal Island exhibit. The encased items were arranged by author Naomi Hirahara\, who will be present to make comments on the display. \nBento lunches will be available for $20 and must be purchased in advance.
