SUMMARY:Notions of Place-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Notions of Place \nArtists Talk 2:30 pm \nDrawing on dreams\, memories\, and the spaces in between\, the works in Notions of Place disintegrate commonly held social views that have acted as fences around our homes. Each of the artists in the exhibition articulate different facets of what we call place. Place can be a refuge\, a home holding our values and dreams in safe harbor. It can also be defined by a border or a wall holding us back from a new life. In ways that are both spiritual and physical\, Notions of Place explores the contours of the artist’s experience of the world. \nCurated by Lauren Kasmer\, Notions of Place includes works by Hilary Baker\, Joyce Dallal\, Natalie M. Godinez\, Kio Griffith\, Flora Kao\, Lauren Kasmer\, LaRissa Rogers\, Jenny Yurshansky\, and HK Zamani. \nSaturday\, June 17th\, 2:30pm: Artist Talk & Closing Reception RSVP

SUMMARY:Shakespeare by the Sea "12th Night" - Pt. Fermin Park
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare by the Sea (SBTS) is a nonprofit organization (tax ID # 95-4785457) that was launched in 1998 by Lisa Coffi. Partnerships with local city organizations enabled us to offer the performances for free. The first season was tremendously successful – over 3\,000 people attended the nine performances at what was then an unused facility in the park. \nSince then\, SBTS has blossomed. We now present a repertory season that runs for 7 weeks – 3 weeks in San Pedro and 4 weeks in venues throughout LA\, Orange and Ventura Counties. \nOur Free Summer Festival is for everyone — regardless of age\, race\, economic stability or address and our audience is a melting pot of Americana. It is the only annual admission free theatrical event that serves the entire South Bay\, LA\, and parts of Orange and Ventura Counties and we are the only Shakespeare company on the West Coast that travels to over 20 communities with its programming. \nPhoto courtesy Wikipedia

SUMMARY:PureBread A Tribute to David Gates & Bread-Grand Annex
DESCRIPTION:Sing along to all the classic 70s songs like It Don’t Matter to Me\, Diary\, Everything I Own\, Lost Without Your Love\, Baby I’m-a Want You\, The Guitar Man\, Sweet Surrender\, If\, Aubrey and Make it With You. Hear all of the top ten hits as well as some deep-cut gems that the band performed during their touring days! \nPureBread is Southern California’s first tribute to Bread\, the Soft Rock supergroup of the 70s. \nBread rose to popularity in 1970 with their first number-one hit single Make it With You which was followed up with 12 top 40 singles making them one of the most prolific commercial pop bands of our time. \nWhen you hear PureBread’s immaculate renderings of the smooth sounds of the 70s\, you will be reminded of just how impactful Bread was in the emergence of soft rock as well as the mark that they made on pop music in general. \nDriven by his deep love and admiration for the music of Bread\, and in particular\, David Gates\, band leader Ray Koukal decided to put together a band of stellar musicians to help him pay tribute to this group. Since then\, PureBread has been working tirelessly to present this music to you in a heartfelt and respectful way. \nTickets

SUMMARY:Solace / Sublime-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Solace / Sublime\nOpening Reception July 8th from 3-5pm \nSolace / Sublime is a group exhibition featuring the work of artists who look to phenomena of the natural world as a primary source of inspiration. The exhibition\, curated by Molly Enholm Velazco\, brings together the work of Contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields\, Megan Frances\, Yvette Gellis\, Virginia Katz\, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco\, seeks to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. Through exploring these forces of nature\, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming\, the eternal and the ephemeral\, the solace and the sublime.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th\, 2023. \nPart 2 A Shadow Out of the Noise\nA hyper-visceral experience is created by Beck+Col’s avant-garde use of opera\, heavy metal\, and fantastical wearable sculptures in their otherworldly performances. Creating overwhelming sensations that employ both the visual and auditory in decidedly non-traditional contexts\, Beck+Col unleash the inner-self to arrive at raw and unrestrained human experience. For this performance of Part Two! a shadow out of the noise\, Beck+Col play on the gothic concept of the double\, exploring the horror that arises from the appearance of one’s exact duplicate. A followup to part one in which a single being is split into two mirrored images by a dark outside force\, Part Two! follows them on a chaotic path desperately trying to reunite in the underworld.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th\, 2023. The performance by Beck+Col will include performers Nadia Maryam and Tetiana Skylarova and feature choreography by Kayla Aguila and Tetiana Skylarova.\nThe gallery is open to the public Thursday – Saturday from 10am to 4pm. SUMMARY:Roy Orbison Returns-Warner Grand
DESCRIPTION:Running Scared Productions Presents\nRoy Orbison Returns \nTickets\nOne Night\, back in 2004\, country western singer Wiley Ray was enticed into performing “Oh Pretty Woman” at a karaoke bar. When he finished\, he was treated to stunned silence and then thunderous applause. \nIt was fun\, but….Wiley Ray wanted to do more: reach more people\, touch more hearts\, keep Roy Orbison alive in the memories of all those who had loved his music for decades\, and introduce a new generation to Roy’s magic\, music\, and stage presence. To accomplish that\, ROY ORBISON RETURNS was realized – a fully-scripted musical theater re-creation of Roy Orbison’s 1980’s concert era years complete with costumes\, lighting\, and staging\, faithful to Orbison’s set lists and musical arrangements. \nHighlights of the concert include: “Only the Lonely”\, “Pretty Woman”\, “Crying”\, “Running Scared”\, “You Got it” and many more from Orbison’s canon of hits. For a taste of the homage…pay to Roy Orbison\, please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYGPdgQr0wk.

Historically\, portrayals of the natural world were often cast as attempts to conjure the aesthetics of the sublime. Accordingly\, paintings of land\, sea and sky would emphasize the grandeur of nature and its epic scale and power to conjure emotions of awe\, and even terror\, within the viewer. In this exhibition\, the works of contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields\, Megan Frances\, Yvette Gellis\, Virginia Katz\, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco\, seek to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. To conjure a view of an endless horizon\, towering mountains\, or the unfettered power of raw nature to offer moments of hope and solace\, as opposed to existential dread. Through exploring these elemental forces of nature\, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming\, the eternal and the ephemeral\, the solace and the sublime.
