SUMMARY:Studio Soup
DESCRIPTION:Studio Soup is a quarterly series of candid conversations about process\, featuring guest artists who share their experience and practice. Artist\, Peggy Reavey\, hosts this closer look at the unique ways artists move from original impulse to finished piece – how their work comes to be. \nTuesday\, January 25th\n6:30 – 8:00pm PST\nRegister free on eventbrite \nJoin the conversation with Peggy Reavey and San Pedro based photographers Ray Carofano\, Dennis Keeley and Guillaume Zuili. \nThe Artists:\nRay Carofano’s obsession with the fringes of society began early when he was told by adults to stop hanging out with “the indigent folk by the railroad tracks.” Fortunately\, Ray disobeyed this order. As a photographer Carofano seeks out faces and places society does not celebrate – or even see. \nDennis Keeley’s photographs are just abstract enough that the viewer questions depictions of the familiar. Dennis is also a teacher. Photography – and the way he teaches – is about how to live. “The taking of a picture\,” Keeley says\, “is pushing the button. The making is what goes on behind the camera.” \nGuillaume Zulli was born in Paris\, and an early trip to India awakened his passion for photography. Now\, between Paris and Los Angeles\, he reveals\, though his 4 x 5 lens\, what he calls “memories and traces.” \n  \nRegister on evenbrite now!

SUMMARY:Studio Soup/Angels Gate Cultural Center-ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Henry Krusoe\, Tidawhitney Lek\, and Floyd Strickland \nSign-up for Studio Soup\nA quarterly series of candid conversations about process\, featuring guest artists who share their experience and practice. Artist\, Peggy Reavey hosts this closer look at the unique ways artists move from original impulse to finished piece – how their work comes to be. \nAbout the featured artists: \nHenry Krusoe\, a studio artist based at Angels Gate Cultural Center\, is drawn to the subject of monsters. Monsters can be found or suggested in his sculpture\, videos\, and drawings. Krusoe challenges us to be ready for monsters – now\, and in our future. \nTidawhitney Lek is the sixth of seven children of parents who survived the Khmer Rouge and emigrated to the Long Beach Cambodian Community\, where she still works and lives. Lek’s large paintings depict the textures and patterns of her neighborhood and the emotions woven throughout. \nFloyd Strickland’s mural-sized paintings of African American culture are full of light and color. His current body of work is mainly populated with school age children who he paints to reveal to them – and the rest of us – how beautiful and brilliant they are. Strickland is based in Los Angeles\, and grew up in the Watts/Compton area\, which influences his work. \nStudio Soup is a free\, virtual event hosted by Angels Gate Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Healing Centered Art: Many Paths to Wellness
DESCRIPTION:Healing Centered Art: Many Paths to Wellness explores how the creation\, sharing\, and utilization of art can enhance our mental health and wellness\, and help heal individual and community trauma. Tiombe Wallace\, MS\, MFT\, will facilitate a panel discussion including artists who share how the process of making and showing art can aid in healing. The interactive discussion will be an exploration of our path through the overlapping mental health impacts of pandemic losses\, racial trauma\, and other stressors in the last year. An opt-in\, healing self-reflection/community care time will be offered. Participants will be invited to create during a brief art expression. Attendees can utilize any simple art supplies available at home. \nTiombe Wallace is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 23 years of experience as a Black intersectional feminist therapist\, educator\, and activist. She is the owner of a private psychotherapy practice\, training and consulting business. She provides services and training for rape crisis and domestic violence advocates\, social workers\, therapists\, educators\, first responders\, and campuses across the nation. Her specializations include intersectional feminist therapy\, culturally responsive trauma-informed practice in social service and educational settings\, sexual and intimate partner violence\, and healing historical trauma in communities experiencing marginalization and oppression. \nPanelists include artists Nica Aquino\, Jason Jenn\, Rosalyn Myles and Vojislav Radovanović\, whose work is currently on view in Sanctuary of the Aftermath at Angels Gate Cultural Center.
