SUMMARY:AltaSea Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AltaSea’s first Open House of 2026\, centered on the power of recycling and ocean stewardship through the ReUp Campaign. This special edition will feature Ryan Harris\, surfboard shaper and sustainability innovator\, who is transforming trash collected from the ocean into functional surfboard fins for boards he upcycles. \nLearn how Ryan’s hands-on approach turns waste he encounters while surfing into high-performance surf components—demonstrating how recycling and creative reuse can directly protect our ocean playground. This event highlights practical solutions\, circular design\, and the role individuals and communities can play in reducing marine debris. \nWhether you’re an ocean advocate\, student\, educator\, or curious about recycling innovation\, this open house offers an inspiring look at trash reimagined. \nRyan Harris grew up in Oregon where surfing required dedication fueled by passion. When he moved to Southern California\, he fell in love with the sacred craft of board shaping\, a natural extension of his artistic background. While working in a traditional poly glass shop\, he met Rey Banatao from Entropy Bio Resins. Rey opened Ryan’s eyes to greener methods of making surfboards. Within a year Ryan was one of the leaders of green board building. \nIn early 2018 Ry launched the Zero Waste Initiative\, another industry first. Just like the Surfboard Industry the Zero Waste system is constantly evolving and he looks forward to the growing list of upcycled sustainable products we can make in it. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:AltaSea Open House: Blue Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AltaSea’s final Open House of the year on Saturday\, November 22\, as we dive into the world of marine technology with a special feature on Blue Robotics. Discover how cutting-edge underwater tech is transforming ocean exploration and sustainability. \nFeaturing:\nRusty Jehangir – Blue Robotics Founder and CEO \nRusty completed degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering prior to founding Blue Robotics. Not long after attending USC\, Rusty made the attempt to build a solar powered surfboard to autonomously travel from LA to Hawaii but could not find affordable thrusters. From there Rusty built his own company to provide affordable parts for smaller-scale remotely operated vehicles for ocean exploration. Today\, Rusty employs almost 70 staff members. \nThis open house will also feature a Career Development Day. \nHigh School Students – You are invited to AltaSea’s Career Development Day. Start-up entrepreneurs\, scientists\, and engineers will be available to speak with\, learn from and establish a network. \nRSVP \n

SUMMARY:Special Guest Ben Lecomte at AltaSea Open House
DESCRIPTION:Alta Sea Open House \n“Beginning next spring\, if everything goes to plan\, Lecomte will swim from Tokyo to San Francisco\, a 5\,500-mile trip expected to take six months. He will swim eight hours a day\, then recuperate the rest of each day on The Discoverer\, the 67-foot sailboat carrying his support team and supplies. \nAlong the way\, Lecomte’s team will collect and store thousands of samples of ocean water and biometric data about Lecomte\, on behalf of a variety of major science organizations researching the condition of the ocean and its impacts on sea life and humans. \nTo help kick off pre-swim preparations\, Lecomte will be featured at the quarterly open house for AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles. The open house begins at 10 am\, Sept. 16\, at Berth 58 in the port\, at 2456 S. Signal St. in San Pedro\, Calif. It is open to the public\, but reservations are required. Email RSVP@altasea.org by Sept. 11. \nAt the open house\, Lecomte will be joined by Matthew Mulrennan\, director of the Ocean Initiative for Lecomte sponsor the XPRIZE Foundation\, and Capt. Charles Moore\, founder and research director of Algalita Marine Research and Education. Moore has spent two decades researching the Great Pacific Garbage Patch\, a dead zone filled with countless tons of pulverized plastic particles and other flotsam left by humans around the planet.” David Bloom
