SUMMARY:Solace / Sublime-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Solace / Sublime\nOpening Reception July 8th from 3-5pm \nSolace / Sublime is a group exhibition featuring the work of artists who look to phenomena of the natural world as a primary source of inspiration. The exhibition\, curated by Molly Enholm Velazco\, brings together the work of Contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields\, Megan Frances\, Yvette Gellis\, Virginia Katz\, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco\, seeks to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. Through exploring these forces of nature\, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming\, the eternal and the ephemeral\, the solace and the sublime.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th\, 2023. \nPart 2 A Shadow Out of the Noise\nA hyper-visceral experience is created by Beck+Col’s avant-garde use of opera\, heavy metal\, and fantastical wearable sculptures in their otherworldly performances. Creating overwhelming sensations that employ both the visual and auditory in decidedly non-traditional contexts\, Beck+Col unleash the inner-self to arrive at raw and unrestrained human experience. For this performance of Part Two! a shadow out of the noise\, Beck+Col play on the gothic concept of the double\, exploring the horror that arises from the appearance of one’s exact duplicate. A followup to part one in which a single being is split into two mirrored images by a dark outside force\, Part Two! follows them on a chaotic path desperately trying to reunite in the underworld.\nThe exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th\, 2023. The performance by Beck+Col will include performers Nadia Maryam and Tetiana Skylarova and feature choreography by Kayla Aguila and Tetiana Skylarova.\nThe gallery is open to the public Thursday – Saturday from 10am to 4pm. To learn more\, please visit angelsgateart.org.

SUMMARY:Notions of Place-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Notions of Place \nArtists Talk 2:30 pm \nDrawing on dreams\, memories\, and the spaces in between\, the works in Notions of Place disintegrate commonly held social views that have acted as fences around our homes. Each of the artists in the exhibition articulate different facets of what we call place. Place can be a refuge\, a home holding our values and dreams in safe harbor. It can also be defined by a border or a wall holding us back from a new life. In ways that are both spiritual and physical\, Notions of Place explores the contours of the artist’s experience of the world. \nCurated by Lauren Kasmer\, Notions of Place includes works by Hilary Baker\, Joyce Dallal\, Natalie M. Godinez\, Kio Griffith\, Flora Kao\, Lauren Kasmer\, LaRissa Rogers\, Jenny Yurshansky\, and HK Zamani. \nSaturday\, June 17th\, 2:30pm: Artist Talk & Closing Reception RSVP

SUMMARY:16th Annual of "Gathering of Elders"-Angels Gate
DESCRIPTION:The 16th Annual Many Winters Gathering of Elders-\nHealing Through Traditional Teachings\nOctober 6th-9th\, 11am – 6pm\, Pacific Time \nSan Pedro\, CA – The Many Winters Gathering of Elders (MWGOE) Organizing Committee is excited to announce its 16th MWGOE\, scheduled for Thursday\, October 6 through Sunday\, October 9\, from 11 am to 6 pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) in San Pedro\, CA on Gabrielino-Tongva territory. The MWGOE is a four-day gathering where Native/Indigenous Elders and knowledge-keepers from across the country gather to share teachings through oral tradition with the community. The Gathering also hosts various Native ceremonies that take place throughout the four days. The event is free\, family-friendly\, open to the public\, and held in partnership with AGCC. \nElders from local tribes including Gabrielino-Tongva\, Acjachemen\, Fernandeño Tataviam\, Chumash\, and other California tribes have attended in the past and will join in October. Tribal elders from other regions (Arizona\, Nevada\, New Mexico\, Montana\, South Dakota and others) are expected\, as well. The Gathering takes place under an arbor which serves as the traditional place of teaching and learning – where Elders pass on knowledge to the younger generation\, which is part of intergenerational healing from historical trauma. \nThe first MWGOE was held on October 12\, 1992\, in response to the false narrative represented by the quincentennial celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ “discovery of America.” Today\, the Gathering continues to be an important occasion for the Native/Indigenous community\, to reconnect to and practice ceremony\, and to celebrate 530 years of spiritual survival. It also allows access for the general public to learn and acknowledge the traditional knowledge and values that have supported and sustained Native lifeways. \nDuring the 16th Many Winters Gathering of Elders\, no alcohol\, drugs\, cameras\, pictures\, video or other recording equipment are allowed; the MWGOE Organizing Committee requests that attendees respect and observe ceremonial protocol. Angels Gate Cultural Center is located at 3601 South Gaffey Street\, San Pedro\, CA\, 90731. \nFor more information regarding the 16th MWGOE and to donate\, please visit mwgoe.org or call (562) 265-8423.

SUMMARY:Magically Thinking-Angels Gate
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Conversations:\nMagically Thinking \nJoin us in the gallery for an interactive conversation about the work of Magically Thinking\, facilitated by Curator Kim Marra with exhibiting artists Sharon Barnes\, Margaret Griffith\, and Dakota Noot. \nIn painting\, drawing\, sculpture and installation\, these artists travel between the physical world and worlds of their own creation\, often blurring the lines between abstraction and representation. Their expression serves as a response to the insecurity of an uncertain world that leads to the mental gymnastics of magical thinking. On view through October 1st\, Magically Thinking includes the work of Sharon Louise Barnes\, Carlos Beltran Arechiga\, Vita Eruhimovitz\, Margaret Griffith\, Kim Marra\, Dakota Noot\, Megan Reed and Jonathan Ryan. \nRSVP at eventbrite to reserve your spot\, capacity is limited! to reserve your spot\, capacity is limited!

SUMMARY:Portals
DESCRIPTION:Live Artist & Curator Talk\nFebruary 17th\, 6:30pm\, PST Online\nSign up on eventbrite \nPORTALS\nJanuary 20th – March 26th\, 2022 \nThe exhibition is currently open to walk-in visitors at reduced capacity during gallery hours. Mask and proof of covid-19 vaccination or negative test are required to enter. No appointments necessary. More information about our policies are available at Plan your visit. \nPORTALS reflects on the transformative nature of passageways – contemplating ideas of boundaries\, entrance and egress\, progress\, and travel into the unknown. Doorways\, both metaphorical and physical\, have reappeared in our social consciousness consistently as significant elements in popular cultural narratives and mythology. These portals facilitate growth through the change they welcome into our worlds. SUMMARY:Stuart Hamilton: Earthly Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Stuart Hamilton: Earthly Meditations\nJanuary 20th – March 26th\, 2022\nOpen to visitors Thursdays – Saturdays\, 10am – 4pm. \nNOTICE: Due to the current surge in local covid-19 cases\, the opening reception event has been cancelled. The exhibition will resume open hours beginning Thursday\, January 20th at limited capacity. Mask and proof of covid-19 vaccination or negative test are required to enter. No appointments necessary. More information about our policies are available at Plan your visit. \nStuart Hamilton: Earthly Meditations includes over 50 works made during the late artist’s 10-year history at the Center. Earthly details taken out of context – stones\, sticks\, and bone fragments – are arranged in geometric patterns reflecting a sense of order in a meditative process that carefully considers the natural world. This juxtaposition – of the simple\, small\, and oft disregarded – against the visual complexity of land formations in rhythmic topographic line\, invites an alternative consideration and appreciation. As the artist remarked on his practice\, “I’ve chosen to focus on the beauty of the small and unspectacular from the natural world around me.” \nStuart Hamilton was born in Manchester\, England in 1950 and relocated to California in 1982\, where he continued his art and teaching practice. Hamilton took graduate art courses from California State University\, Long Beach and later received a Masters of Fine Art from Claremont Graduate University in 1984. His works are included in both US and UK collections\, and have shown throughout California. Hamilton was an adjunct art professor at Coastline Community College\, Westwood College\, and Art Institute of California\, among others. He passed at the age of 70 in February of 2021\, and will be missed among the AGCC community. \nGallery Hours starting January 20th:\nThursdays – Saturdays\, 10am – 4:00pm\nPlan your visit.

SUMMARY:Hair-pulling Between Good and Evil/Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Hair-pulling Between Good and Evil explores ghost stories of Filipino Diaspora\nNew Exhibition at Angels Gate Cultural Center Opens October 9th\, 2021 \nSan Pedro\, CA – Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) is pleased to present a new art exhibition\, Hair-pulling Between Good & Evil\, opening Saturday\, October 9th with a public reception from 2pm-4pm. The exhibition will remain on view in the galleries through December 11th\, with a virtual artist talk on November 4th\, from 6:30pm – 8pm. Hair-pulling Between Good & Evil presents the work of Nica Aquino\, Jullianne De La Cruz\, John DeCastro\, Cirilo Domine\, Mark Golamco\, Philip Košćak\, Christine Morla\, Michael Rippens\, Gloria Gem Sánchez\, and Diane Williams; with curation by Christopher Velasco and Dakota Noot\, and explores ideas around Filipino/a/x identity. \n“Filipino/a/x identity is cross-woven\, stranger and stronger for its differences. As suggested by their histories\, both personal and historical\, the art offers not finished singularity\, but constant evolution. It rotates between color and form\, age and gender\, natural and man-made. No absolutes are given\, yet demonstrations of answers are allowed.” – Christopher Velasco and Dakota Noot\, Curators \nThe Philippines have a rich tradition of weaving and mixed media. The artists in this exhibition not only weave together different materials\, but family histories and connections in Hair-pulling Between Good and Evil. Identity is personal\, historical\, and even haunted. Pulling from disparate identities of first\, second\, and third generations\, but also mixed-raced backgrounds\, the artists bridge familial tradition and heritage between the living and the dead. Ancestral spirits and family connections continue to occupy the Filipino diaspora\, which the artists explore in this exhibition. These elements are played out in mixed media assemblage\, sculpture\, weavings\, paintings\, photography\, and performance. \nGallery appointments are available Thursdays – Saturday\, between the hours of 10am and 4:30pm. More information about the exhibition and reserving gallery appointments can be found at angelsgateart.org. \nChristine Morla_Floating Sleeping Mats.jpg \nCirilo Domine_still\,here.jpg

SUMMARY:"Multiples" Art Opening-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Angels Gate Cultural Center is pleased to present a new art exhibition\, Multiples\, opening Saturday\, July 10th 2021\, on view through September 12th. The artists in Multiples share a strategy of building meaning from an expanded concept of the multiple\, as found in iterative series\, repetition of mass-produced objects and images in new and site responsive works. The exhibition will be open by appointment viewing only\, with information and appointment registration at angelsgateart.org. \n“Multiples demonstrates ingenuity\, the ability to create meaning in unexpected ways and examine the familiar – something much needed today as we encounter spaces and objects in person once again.” -Amy Eriksen\, Executive Director\, Angels Gate Cultural Center. \nMultiples presents the work of Nathan Gulick\, Colleen Hargaden\, Seth Lower\, Megan Mueller\, Samuel Scharf\, Noah Spindler\, Katie Thoma\, and Kayta Usvitsky\, with a text by Hannah Sage Kay. This group of Los Angeles based artists shares a strategy of building meaning from the multiple; from iterative or serial works\, the use of standardized prefabricated materials\, to the accumulation of images. As Hannah Sage Kay writes in Fool Me Twice\, the exhibition investigates\, “what makes an encounter between object and viewer sincere? Do objects embody their functions regardless of time\, place\, and context?” In an effort to make citable organizational structures and units of construction in the built environment\, these works challenge expectations of uniformity and predictability. \nMore information about the exhibition and pending appointments can be found at angelsgateart.orgg. \nAbout Angels Gate Cultural Center\nAngels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s that created art studios and exhibition space within the WWII era army barracks of Angels Gate Park near the Port of Los Angeles. Today\, AGCC hosts over 50 artist studios in addition to a variety of programs to engage the diverse communities of the Los Angeles Harbor region\, including arts education in local schools\, community classes\, cultural events\, and exhibitions of contemporary art. More information about AGCC is available at angelsgateart.orgg. \nCecelia Koger\nDirector of Exhibitions & Public Programs\nAngels Gate Cultural Center\n3601 S Gaffey St.\, Box 1 Bldg. Collaborative works\, resulting from the artists’ community workshops held at AGCC this fall\, will be an integral part of the exhibition. \n Jill Moniz\, established curator in various Los Angeles spaces\, curated the exhibition and corresponding workshops to fully engage the local community in a project that explores diverse themes that bridge San Pedro. \n Presentations starting at 1pm in the gallery about the impact of plastic on our oceans will be given by the Surfrider Foundation and Captain Charles Moore of the Alguita\, ocean research vessel. South Bay community members Captain Charles Moore\, Surfrider Foundation South Bay Chapter\, and the Glove Boat collected and donated salvaged ocean refuse for use in McRight’s workshops about the projected sea level rise and oceanic plastic. Art works incorporating the salvaged materials will be on display. \n This project is supported\, in part\, by the Port of Los Angeles through the Community Investment Grant Program. \n Bridging San Pedro will be on view and free to the public in the AGCC gallery from 10am – 4pm Monday through Saturday\, beginning January 18th and open through April 4th\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Community Built Tile Ocean-Angels Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:LIKE THE OCEAN – WITH ARTIST ALEXIS SLICKELMAN \n11/9 – 3-5pm (Building F):\nBuild an ocean tile by tile in a workshop with ceramic artist Alexis Slickelman. Participants will paint hand cut tiles with a variety of green and blue glazes that will be provided by the artist. Harness the power of making and collaborating with the community to create enough tiles for an 8’ x 10’ mural\, representative of both the diversity of the San Pedro community and the uniting force of the Port. During the workshop\, share your ocean and San Pedro stories with other participants and the artist. Bridging San Pedro: Visual Literacy as Community Practice is focused on the development of visual literacy in San Pedro community members through hands on making and deep listening exercises. Four artists with singular\, but intersecting\, art projects will work at Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) to foster a greater awareness and association between the Port of Los Angeles\, life in San Pedro and art as a daily lived experience. Each artist will lead free workshops during which members of the community will create elements that will be used to compose the final art piece. These projects will culminate in an exhibition\, curated by jill moniz\, in the AGCC galleries during the first quarter of 2020. This project is supported\, in part\, by the Port of Los Angeles through the Community Investment Grant Program.
