SUMMARY:“Albatross” Filming Screening-Angel's Gate Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:An educational film screening event\, ‘SEA PULSE films’ is pleased to present a special documentary film ALBATROSS by Chris Jordan’s – an intimate portrait of these magnificent seabirds on Midway island in the North Pacific Ocean to be shown at Angels Gate Cultural Center in Building H. \n“Albatross” takes us on a journey to the Midway Island in the heart of the Pacific where these beautiful birds come to mate and breed. Their babies hatch from their eggs\, and the fluffy chicks wait alone for their parents to return from their foraging trips to sea. \nHowever\, the joy will been shattered by the tragedy. Chicks are facing a long painful death\, bodies filled with plastic trash. \nThe film evokes a mixed bag of emotions\, and delivers a profound message of reverence and renewal. This powerfully moving ‘love story’ may change the way you see everything. \nThis SEA Pulse films event will comprise the films\, including two short films ‘A Mean to an End’ and ‘Sometime Soon’ by Bill Macdonald\, dance performances by Vannia Ibarguen (Contemporary) and Kanna Kai Jones (Butoh) to express the messages\, and a Q&A\, which the audiences can receive the most current information about the subjects. \nUnclassified (ALBATROSS is an adult film with strong emotional content\, so we recommend it for viewers age 12 and above.) \nAlbatross the film trailer: https://www.albatrossthefilm.com/\nFREE event\, no ticket required.

SUMMARY:Coming Into Being: Gathering the Elder in Me - Angels Gate
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition and installation by Laurie Steelink\nOctober 13th –December 8th\, 2018 Opening reception. \nComing Into Being: Gathering the Elder in Me is an installation by multimedia artist and curator Laurie Steelink. Drawing on her Native American ancestry\, the show combines photographs\, paintings\, drawings\, and video\, with ephemera\, artworks and photographs from her family’s collection. Steelink regards the project as a kind of anthropological inquiry into herself and the past bodies of work she’s produced; in re-contextualizing these works\, the old and the new take on different meanings. \nA member of Arizona’s Akimel O’otham Tribe\, Steelink was born in 1960 and given up for adoption by her birth mother. At six-months old she became the child of Jean and Cornelius Steelink\, Euro-Americans\, and staunch liberals who came from a long line of revolutionaries\, Wobblies\, Civil Rights activists\, scientists\, and artists. Steelink was aware of her Native American ancestry\, and coming of age in a mixed-race family\, in an academic\, middle class environment\, left her grappling with identity issues that she’s finally beginning to resolve. At the age of forty\, Steelink located and met her birth mother and Akimel O’otham relatives\, and has become an active member of Southern California’s Indigenous community. \nSteelink’s exhibition will coincide with the 14th Many Winters Gathering of Elders\, an Indigenous cultural event that will take place at Angels Gate from October 11th through the 14th\, and will incorporate a second curatorial project she organized\, In a Good Way\, which surveys previous Gatherings between 1992 and 2017. Bringing together photographs\, printed matter\, and a new series of portraits of Southern California Indigenous peoples by photographer\, Tom Gugler\, In a Good Way was assembled with advisory direction from Louie Robles Jr.\, from the Acjachemen Nation and the Gathering of Elders Advisory Committee. \nLaurie Steelink is an artist\, curator\, and musician. Born in Phoenix\, Arizona\, and raised in Tucson\, she received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute\, and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts\, Rutgers University. She served as archivist for the Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection in New York\, and was director of Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica and Culver City. In 2012\, Steelink founded Cornelius Projects\, an exhibition space in San Pedro that she named after her father. The curatorial focus at Cornelius Projects is primarily the cultural history and the artists of San Pedro\, the Harbor Area\, Long Beach\, and the South Bay.

SUMMARY:14th Annual Many Winters Gathering of Elders
DESCRIPTION:The Many Winters Gathering of Elders Committee announces the forthcoming Many Winters Gathering of Elders at the Angels Gate Cultural Center\, 3601 South Gaffey Street\, San Pedro\, CA 90731\, on October 11\, 12\, 13\, & 14\, 2018. \nLocated within the traditional Tongva territories\, The Many Winters Gathering of Elders Committee will be welcoming and hosting Indigenous elders from local\, national\, and international communities across Turtle Island. The Many Winters Gathering of Elders community purposes are: to foster a greater understanding of traditional Indigenous knowledge\, cultural beliefs\, contemporary struggles\, and provide culturally educational experiences for all Indigenous and public participants. \nOver a four-day period\, the Many Winters Gathering of Elders will provide the cultural and educational places for people to collectively listen to and learn from an array of important Indigenous dignitaries comprising of elders\, community leaders\, and cultural educators\, share songs\, dances\, and traditional and contemporary stories. Fully immersed participation by listening and learning about Native American struggles for cultural sustainability\, self-determination\, and sovereignty for future generations possibilities is part of this year’s 14th Many Winters Gathering of Elders living experiences. \nWith all future relational generations at risk due to the perpetually rapid deterioration\, harming\, and wounding of Mother Earth\, a greater understanding for a collective good mind\, “alternative” ways of living\, and a process of reciprocal healing requires a basic call to consciousness when responding to all forms of environmental pollution\, economic and settler colonial violence. \nThe first Many Winters Gathering of Elders resulted from John Funmaker\, Ho-Chunk leader and community activist\, vision to help\, based on Native American elders’ leadership\, provide a community place for connecting\, learning\, sharing\, and healing. In addition\, Funmaker’s understanding of the multigenerational colonial violence\, leading up to the 500-year celebration of Christopher Columbus’s “discovery” of America\, required a gathering place for healing past wounds\, historical trauma\, and creating healthier future opportunities. \nThe Gathering is free and open to the public. Absolutely NO ALCOHOL\, DRUGS\, CAMERAS\, AUDIO/VIDEO OR OTHER RECORDING EQUIPMENT ALLOWED. For more information\, please call (562) 405-5767. \nThe Many Winters Gathering of Elders Committee is comprised of individuals from the Red Earth Defense\, Cornelius Projects\, and Angels Gate Cultural Center organizations\, and the Gathering is sponsored by City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

SUMMARY:Coastal / Border Performances
DESCRIPTION:At 4pm Jimena Sarno will present a choir performance by the C3LA Choir activating her “From Sea to Shining Sea” experience. Borrowing its title from the last line of the song “America the Beautiful”\, the project utilizes the acoustic qualities of the site\, ballistics data and weapon sounds as re-structuring parameters to deconstruct and rearrange the song for a choir performance. The reimagined musical score breaks down the phonemes and syllables of the lyrics in this iconic tune and expands them into 12 minutes of haunting mantra and firings of voices across the sonic field. \nThe performance will be followed by Mecca Vazie Andrews at approximately 5pm\, where she will present the culmination of her MOVEMENT movement workshops with the debut of her new work “Fringes” involving the community.

SUMMARY:"Greetings Friends" at Angel's Gate
DESCRIPTION:Paul Pescador will produce Greetings Friends\, titled after one of the films that Disney produced\, “Saludos Amigos.” In 1940\, the United States government created the Office of Inter-American Affairs out of concern for the potential Nazi infiltration in Latin America. They hired Walt Disney to produce animated cartoons\, most of which focused upon Latin America as subject\, some of theses videos took on health issues\, such as malaria\, water-treatment and tuberculosis. In Pescador’s project\, he will reconsider these films and their relationship between cultural diplomacy and colonialism. He will examine some of the regions that Walt Disney visited and documented in these films and attempt to understand how Disney iconography is still being culturally appropriated today. Pescador will present his film followed by a Q + A on October 7th at 7pm in Main Gallery II.

SUMMARY:Coastal/Border
DESCRIPTION:Coastal/Border is an exhibition of original site-responsive performance and installation work with corresponding public programming curated by Raquel Gutiérrez and Martabel Wasserman. Taking as its starting point the landscape and history of the area surrounding Angels Gate Cultural Center\, six Southern California based artists will interrogate how the coast is fortified as border\, and how in turn that impacts the Latino/Latina communities of Los Angeles and beyond. In asking artists to develop a performance or public programming component of their work\, the curators seek to emphasize the ways in which historical connections between Los Angeles and Latin America are embodied in the present. \nCoastal/Border will be open to the public September 16th and run through December 17th 2017 at Angels Gate Cultural Center.

In these uncertain times\, with the rapid destruction of Mother Earth\, the deterioration of the natural world through global warming\, the contamination of water\, the pollution of air; the ecological consequences are inevitable. The return of our spiritual connection to ceremony\, prayer\, and Indigenous philosophy will ultimately be our survival. The Elders will be addressing these vital issues and how we must return to the original teachings of our ancestors for our survival as human beings and the survival of all living things. The wisdom of our elders can enable one to come into atonement and find harmony and peace within their environment and within themselves. This event is for those people who love the Mother Earth and care about her survival. October 12-15\, 2017\, Angels Gate Cultural Center.

In The Measures Taken\, Agitators attempt to convince a Control Chorus (performed by the workers’ chorus) that they did the right thing by killing a Young Comrade\, re-enacting the events leading up to his death to demonstrate that they were operating on behalf of the collective good.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Stoned\, Herd\, and Yup Yup
DESCRIPTION:Angels Gate Cultural Center presents the opening of three new exhibitions: Stoned\, Herd and Yup Yup. The exhibitions each investigate the role of the individual in a collective body. JD Samson’s Stoned excavates a personal narrative through the repetitive gesture of drilling holes in rocks. In Yup Yup Victoria Fu and Matt Rich make aprons\, a uniform associated with obscured labor\, unique canvases. The artists and collaborative duos in Herd investigate histories of humans differentiating themselves each other and nature through site-responsive and timely work activated through audience engagement

SUMMARY:soundpedro
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Indoor/Outdoor Site-Specific Sound Installations \nEar Oriented Multi-sensory Presentations \nSoundPedro will be the first of biannual event highlighting sound art. The event will showcase single- and multi-media artworks that investigate the way we use our senses to perceive and experience.
