SUMMARY:Coastal/Border
DESCRIPTION:Coastal/Border is an exhibition of original site-responsive performance and installation work with corresponding public programming curated by Raquel Gutiérrez and Martabel Wasserman. Taking as its starting point the landscape and history of the area surrounding Angels Gate Cultural Center\, six Southern California based artists will interrogate how the coast is fortified as border\, and how in turn that impacts the Latino/Latina communities of Los Angeles and beyond. In asking artists to develop a performance or public programming component of their work\, the curators seek to emphasize the ways in which historical connections between Los Angeles and Latin America are embodied in the present. \nCoastal/Border will be open to the public September 16th and run through December 17th 2017 at Angels Gate Cultural Center.

In these uncertain times\, with the rapid destruction of Mother Earth\, the deterioration of the natural world through global warming\, the contamination of water\, the pollution of air; the ecological consequences are inevitable. The return of our spiritual connection to ceremony\, prayer\, and Indigenous philosophy will ultimately be our survival. The Elders will be addressing these vital issues and how we must return to the original teachings of our ancestors for our survival as human beings and the survival of all living things. The wisdom of our elders can enable one to come into atonement and find harmony and peace within their environment and within themselves. This event is for those people who love the Mother Earth and care about her survival. October 12-15\, 2017\, Angels Gate Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Throw the Comrade in the Limepit: Brecht and Group Performance
DESCRIPTION:In the Galleries: \nHERD\nCommunity and Project Space \n(Maura Brewer + Maya Gurantz\, Artemisa Clark\,\nVanessa Roveto and Melissanthi Saliba)\ninvestigate histories of humans differentiating themselves from each other and nature through site-responsive and timely work activated through audience engagement. \nFree Lecture-Demonstration \nTHROW THE COMRADE IN THE LIMEPIT:\nBRECHT AND GROUP PERFORMANCE \nJoin us as Maya Gurantz presents a public\, interactive lecture-demonstration on Bertolt Brecht’s The Measures Taken. Written for workers’ choruses in the 1930s\, Brecht’s lehrstuck\, or learning plays\, marked one of the earliest attempts at what contemporary art would refer to as Social Practice. In The Measures Taken\, Agitators attempt to convince a Control Chorus (performed by the workers’ chorus) that they did the right thing by killing a Young Comrade\, re-enacting the events leading up to his death to demonstrate that they were operating on behalf of the collective good.

SUMMARY:soundpedro
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Indoor/Outdoor Site-Specific Sound Installations \nEar Oriented Multi-sensory Presentations \nSoundPedro will be the first of biannual event highlighting sound art. The event will showcase single- and multi-media artworks that investigate the way we use our senses to perceive and experience. This event will be produced by FLOOD\, who for 10 years brought Soundwalk to Long Beach. \nAfter the final SoundWalk in 2013\, sound artists throughout the region lamented the loss of a high-profile niche event that introduced mainstream communities to an art form frequently relegated to the margins. Last year\, Amy Eriksen\, Executive Director of Angels Gate Cultural Center\, a venue with a history of showing experimental and sound work\, reached out to FLOOD with the goal of starting a new event. “Visual art pieces are often shown in galleries all over the South Bay. This collaboration seeks to bring another great niche of artists to be heard\, sound artists all over the country will dazzle the hilltop\,” says Amy Eriksen\, Executive Director of Angels Gate Cultural Center. \nProduced by FLOOD \nCurated by Glenn Bach\, Nisa Karnsomport\, Alan Nakagawa\, and Mark Walsh \nParticipating Artists include: Aught Collective/Hot Tomorrows\, Glenn Bach\, Borderline Antigone\, Terry Braunstein\, Faraday Cage\, Rychard Cooper\, Robert Crouch\, César Dávila-Irizarry\, The Dirty Chaps\, Ear Meal Webcast\, Martin Espino & William Almas\, foreign native\, Wolf Gowin & Tom Zear\, heare\, The Laptop Collective\, Janet Lozada\, MicDrop\, Loren Nerell\, New Culture Media Group\, Yann Novak\, phog masheeen\, Tom Peters\, QRUX\, RadioMachineMagazine\, sARTe\, Susan Rawcliffe\, Steve Roden\, Som\, Southern California Soundscape Ensemble\, Steven Speciale\, TV-MA\, Raze the WhiteBox\, univac\, Roxanne Varzi\, Elouise Walker\, wikiGong\, Sander Roscoe Wolff\, X EYES \nFree Admission \nFree Parking

SUMMARY:Landslide: slips in time\, place and identity
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: September 11 from 1pm -5pm \nAngels Gate Cultural Center is pleased to present Landslide: slips in time\, place and identity; a grouping of solo and two-person exhibitions exploring how place can function as a porthole to the past and imagined future. The title references the 2011 landslide near White Point Nature preserve\, where site-specific works will be installed the weekend of the exhibition’s opening. Both a historic phenomenon and constant possibility in coastal San Pedro and Palos Verdes\, Landslide also references the 1975 Fleetwood Mac song\, in which Stevie Nicks sings “Can I sail through the changing ocean tides? / Can I handle the seasons of my life?” Together these references speak to the tension between the individual/collective and interior/exterior landscapes the artists in this exhibition – Michael Davis\, Alexandra Pacheco Garcia\, Vanessa Madrid and Suzanne Wright – address in their distinct styles
