DESCRIPTION:The Many Winters Gathering of Elders (MWGOE) Organizing Committee is excited to announce its 18th MWGOE\, scheduled for Thursday\, October 10th through Sunday\, October 13th from 11am to 6pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center(AGCC) in San Pedro\, CA on Gabrieleno Tongva Territory. The MWGOE is a four-day gathering where Native/Indigenous Elders and knowledge-keepers from across the country gather to share teachings through oral tradition with the community. The Gathering also host Native ceremonies throughout the four days. MWGOE is held in partnership with AGCC\, open to the public\, free to attend and family friendly \nThe MWGOE plays a vital role in the Native community of greater Los Angeles\, with the participation and support of the original peoples of the land. The vision of the Gathering is to host a sacred space for people to come together\, with the intention to listen\, learn from and support Indigenous communities\, and to inspire a healthier future for all people. \nElders from local tribes including Gabrielino Shoshone\, Gabrielino Tongva\, Ackachemen\, Fernandeno Tataviam\, Chumash and other California tribes have attended in the past and will join this October. Tribal elders from other regions(Arizona\, Minnesote\, Nevada\, New Mexico\, New York\, North Carolina\, Oklahoma\, South Dakota and others) are expected as well. The Gathering takes place under an arbor which serves as the traditional place of teaching and learning – where Elders pass on knowledge to the younger generation\, and is part of intergenerational healing from historical trauma. \nThe 2024 MWGOE Logo Art was created by Meyo Marrufo (Eastern Pomo from the Clear Lake Basin\, and citizens of Robinson Rancheria). \nHISTORY of MWGOE \nThe first MWGOE was held on October 12\, 1992\, in response to the false narrative represented by the quincentennial celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ “discovery of America.” Today\, the Gathering continues to be an important occasional for the Native/Indigenous community\, to reconnect to and practice ceremony\, and to celebrate over 530 years of spiritual survival. It also allows access for the general public to learn and acknowledge the traditional knowledge and vallues that have supported and sustained Native lifeways. \nDuring the Many Winters Gathering of Elders\, no alcohol\, drugs\, cameras\, pictures\, video or other recording equipment are allowed; the MWGOE Organizing Committee reequests that attendees respect and observe ceremonial protocol\, available on the MWGOE Linktree. The free event includes a Holiday Art Sale\, Community Class demos\, Family Art Workshop\, Direct from the Classroom: Fall Selections art show\, Teen Mural Club unveiling\, Peruvian food truck Mikhuna\, and artist talk in the gallery for the current exhibition\, RED EARTH GAZE. \nOpen Studios Day is a free\, all-ages event that provides the public a glimpse into the process\, art\, and lives of local artists who create at the Center. AGCC hosts one of the largest studio artist programs in the region with a diverse range of artistic disciplines including ceramics\, photography\, printmaking\, writing\, sculpture\, videography\, music\, and painting. This self-guided tour of artist studios provides a unique opportunity to interact with the artists and purchase contemporary works of art. \nThe Holiday Art Sale in Building H will give the public an opportunity to support local artists and the Center by purchasing creations by AGCC Studio Artists. The sale in H will take place for one day only\, with additional works available for purchase directly from the artists in their studios. \nLive Community Class demonstrations include: Pulse Dance\, Watercolor\, Music Exploration\, Printmaking\, Welding\, Master Painting\, and Raku. DESCRIPTION:Gallery Conversations – Solace / Sublime \nGallery Conversations\, AGCC’s onsite artist talk series\, will feature the curator and several artists of Solace/Sublime in a live conversation and Q&A in the gallery on Saturday\, August 19th\, at 3pm. \nPhoto Courtesy of: Megan Frances\, Subtropical Tangle III\, 2020. \nGallery Conversations\, AGCC’s onsite artist talk series\, will feature the curator\, Molly Enholm Velazco\, and several artists of Solace/Sublime in a live conversation and Q&A in the gallery on Saturday\, August 19th\, at 3pm.  \nSolace/Sublime is a group exhibition featuring the work of artists who look to the phenomenon of the natural world as a primary source of inspiration. Historically\, portrayals of the natural world were often cast as attempts to conjure the aesthetics of the sublime. Accordingly\, paintings of land\, sea and sky would emphasize the grandeur of nature and its epic scale and power to conjure emotions of awe\, and even terror\, within the viewer. In this exhibition\, the works of contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields\, Megan Frances\, Yvette Gellis\, Virginia Katz\, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco\, seek to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. To conjure a view of an endless horizon\, towering mountains\, or the unfettered power of raw nature to offer moments of hope and solace\, as opposed to existential dread. Through exploring these elemental forces of nature\, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming\, the eternal and the ephemeral\, the solace and the sublime.
