SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture Series-Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Minds: Dolphins\, Apes and the origins of Human Intelligence \nBy Dr. Craig Stanford\, USC \nEveryone knows of Jane Goodall’s pioneering studies of wild chimpanzees\, and all they have told us about what it means to be human. From maternal love to extraordinary intelligence\, and from murder to infanticide\, chimpanzees and other apes reveal to us the bright and dark sides of human nature. And most people know about dolphins; that they are clever\, big-brained\, highly social mammals of the sea. But very few people are aware of the striking parallels between apes and dolphins. In both groups we see shrewd politics\, murder\, sexual violence\, sophisticated means of communication\, and cultural traditions. Apes and dolphins are only very distantly related – they have not had a common ancestor for almost 100 million years. This convergence of traits is due not to shared ancestry\, but the extraordinary intelligence they both possess. Their intelligence is in turn related to their societies and their social behavior. \nDr. Craig Stanford is an internationally renowned expert on animal behavior and human origins. Professor of Biological Sciences and Anthropology at USC\, Stanford has conducted field research on chimpanzees and other animals for 30 years in Africa and Asia. He is best known for his research on chimpanzee hunting and meat-eating in Gombe National Park\, Tanzania\, in collaboration with Jane Goodall. Stanford holds a Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley and is the author of 16 books and 150 articles on animal behavior and conservation. His most recent book is The New Chimpanzee: a 21st Century Portrait of Our Closest Kin\, to be published in March 2018 by Harvard University Press. He is deeply involved in wildlife conservation and lectures around the world on the need to preserve biodiversity in all its forms. \nClick here to reserve your free ticket on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:See the Sea\, Si? Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the water for a floating oceanography lab! This hands-on trip will be aboard a specially equipped vessel where you’ll have opportunities to study some of the near shore animals. Learn about the fascinating world of plankton\, animals that call mud their home and some of the fish that prefer the sandy bottom. \nThe trip starts with a “fish-eye” view of the underwater world living on and around the dock\, which will be revealed by an underwater camera. Passengers will be able to watch this real-time ocean documentary featuring sea anemones\, sea stars\, tunicates\, and fish via monitors on the boat. \nOnce the boat enters the harbor\, a specialized net called an otter trawl will be set. Any fishes collected with this net will be placed in tanks on the boat giving passengers up close and personal looks at several types of flatfish\, perch and croaker. \nA trap will also be set on the ocean floor to try to catch sand bass\, scorpion fish\, crabs and other bottom-dwelling critters. Critters caught in the trap will be displayed onboard giving everyone a chance to touch some of the animals. \nPre-registration is required. Please call 310-548-7562 to reserve your spot today!\nMember Price: $25\, Non-Member Price: $30

SUMMARY:Meet the Grunion at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will be offering a “Meet the Grunion” program Tuesday\, April 17\, 2018. The program will be offered again on May 1st. The Aquarium will open at 8 p.m. and a film on grunion begins at 9 p.m. in the John M. Olguin Auditorium. Prior to the predicted run\, everyone will gather on the beach to await the grunion. The program cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors\, students\, and children. Warm clothing is recommended.\nGrunion are small sardine-size fish of the silversides family\, which are one of the few fish species in the world that actually come ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches. They are found from central California through Baja California\, with Cabrillo Beach being one of the better places to observe the fish.\nAt times the beach may look as if it is covered in a blanket of silver as the wriggling fish arrive to mate. The females burrow into the sand to lay eggs while the males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs. The fertilized eggs incubate for about 9 days in the sand before the tumbling action of the waves from the next series of highest tides cause them to hatch\, and carries them back out to sea.\nGrunion may be caught by hand in the months of March\, June\, and July which is the open season; grunion catchers 16 years and older must have a valid California fishing license. During April and May grunion may be observed\, but not captured.

SUMMARY:Discovery Lecture California Grunion
DESCRIPTION:Surf\, Sand\, and Silversides: Research and Outreach with California Grunion \nBy Dr. Karen Martin\, Pepperdine University \nThe spectacular midnight runs of California Grunion are well known to patrons of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. This endemic silverside fish\, found only off California and Baja California\, shares critical spawning habitat with millions of beach goers along one of the world’s most heavily populated coastlines. Spawning occurs during spring and summer\, the times of heaviest human use. Although regulations offer some protection\, human impacts on California Grunion include a recreational fishery with bare-handed catching\, and habitat loss from shoreline armoring and beach erosion. The focus of this talk will be the adaptations and adventures of these amazing fish in the California beach sand\, and the grunion’s influence on beach goers and beach management. From the ability to arrest development\, to the recent expansion of their spawning runs far north of Point Conception\, these surfing silversides are full of surprises. Our favorite fish will be compared with other beach-spawning fishes from around the world to show how the rewards of this behavior may outweigh the risks in many different ecosystems. \nKaren Martin is a Distinguished Professor of Biology and Frank R. Seaver Chair in Natural Science at Pepperdine University. A doctorate in biology at UCLA was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Friday Harbor Laboratories\, University of Washington. She has published three scholarly books and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on coastal ecology\, amphibious fishes\, and the vertebrate transition from water to land. She co-founded the Beach Ecology Coalition\, a nonprofit organization to bring together beach maintenance workers\, managers\, ecologists\, surfers\, lifeguards\, and resource managers to balance human recreation with wildlife conservation on sandy beaches. She co-founded the Grunion Greeters\, a citizen scientist group that provides data on grunion populations throughout their habitat range\, and this group has worked with aquariums\, environmental groups\, government agencies\, and coastal cities and counties. She received the “Environmental Partnership Award” from the America Shore and Beach Preservation Association and the “Conservation Achievement Award” from the American Fisheries Society. \nClick here to reserve your free ticket on Eventbrite.
