SUMMARY:Free Harbor Boat Tours
DESCRIPTION:The Port of Los Angeles will host free harbor boat tours event on Saturday\, May 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of World Trade Week. The public tours are one-hour in length and will depart every thirty minutes from both Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington and the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro. No\nreservations are required. \n“The Port is proud to offer harbor boat tours\, which offer the public a unique opportunity to learn about the logistics and operations of North America’s premier gateway for international commerce” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “It’s also a great way to see the progress that has been made along the LA Waterfront.” \nThe narrated harbor tours provide passengers with close-up views of America’s Port® in action\, including container ships\, the Vincent Thomas Bridge and a waterside view of the LA Waterfront. \nPort visitors and community members of all ages are welcome. Back by popular demand this year\, the “Waves ‘n Woofs” boat tours will offer special pet-friendly tours for owners of well-behaved dogs on a leash departing at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. from both locations. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is located at 600 Sampson Way\, Berth 84\, in San Pedro. Banning’s Landing Community Center is located at 100 E. Water St. in Wilmington. Boats at both locations are wheelchair accessible and have restrooms on board. The hour-long tours offer seating on a first-come\, first-served basis\, with refreshments available for purchase once aboard the tour boat. Light jackets and sunscreen are recommended\, and don’t forget your camera. \nAdditional attractions for visitors to explore along the LA Waterfront include the Gateway Plaza Fanfare Fountains\, the Battleship IOWA\, the Los Angeles Maritime Museum\, the S.S. Lane Victory and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.  CRAFTED at the Port of LA offers a unique handmade craft shopping experience and is adjacent to Brouwerij West with freshly brewed spirits and gourmet food trucks. \nFor more than 90 years\, World Trade Week – an initiative of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce – has been the nation’s most extensive and unique program of its kind dedicated to educating the public about the importance and benefits of global trade to the local and U.S. economy. SUMMARY:Terminal Islanders Exhibit at Los Angeles Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:New Exhibit at the Museum \n“A Day in a Life of a Japanese American Fishing Village”  \n“In the early 20th-century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish.  Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally form the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor.  \nAfter the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and America’s subsequent entry into World War II\, the entire Terminal Island community was relocated to internment camps\, but the residents never forgot their beloved Terminal Island village. Today\, the Terminal Islanders Club\, a group of former residents and their descendants\, preserve the history and friendships of this lost community.  \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.” \nMuseum Hours : Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm  (last entry 4:30pm)\nClosed Mondays and Holidays.
